Overview

The Fryer MB-10R takes the smallest MB toolroom bed mill and replaces the manual quill with a rigid spindle head. Travels stay at 32 x 17 x 19 in (813 x 432 x 483 mm) and the table at 14 x 50 in (356 x 1,270 mm), but the spindle is a 12 hp (8.9 kW) peak CAT 40 unit running 60 - 8,000 rpm, and Fryer's table gives a tool storage capacity of 12 with 20 optional.

How does it differ from the MB-10Q in use? The MB-10Q has a 2 speed gear box, 238 ft-lb (323 Nm) in low gear and a top speed of 4,500 rpm. The MB-10R has a single range with 40 ft-lb (54 Nm) of maximum torque and nearly twice the speed. One is a drilling and boring machine that can also contour; the other is a small machining center for end mills, aluminium and tool-changed cycles.

Manual operation is kept in a different form. Instead of mechanical handles Fryer fits electronic handles for manual movement, a "Do One" semi-automatic mode and fast set-up keys. Absolute encoders mean no homing is required.

Tool changer status needs a question to the factory. The specification table lists the 12 tool capacity as the base figure, while the series page speaks of an optional tool changer and the options sheet carries both the 12 station and the 20 station carousel changers as option numbers. Either changer takes 7 seconds per change and tools up to 11.8 in (300 mm) long and 15.4 lb. The machine weighs 5,000 lb (2,268 kg) and runs on 35 A at 208-250 VAC, 3 phase.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Rigid spindle head with a 60 - 8,000 rpm CAT 40 spindle and 12 hp (8.9 kW) peak
  • 12 or 20 tool automatic tool changer available, with bi-directional tool selection
  • Electronic handles and a "Do One" mode keep manual-style operation
  • Same 103 x 80 in (2,616 x 2,032 mm) operating floor area as the quill-head MB-10Q
  • 208-250 VAC three-phase supply at 35 A; a single phase conversion is listed as an option

Limitations

  • Maximum spindle torque is 40 ft-lb (54 Nm), far below the 238 ft-lb (323 Nm) low gear of the MB-10Q
  • Tool change takes 7 seconds
  • Rapid traverse is 400 ipm (10.2 m/min), a third of the X and Y rapids of the MC-30B
  • Whether the tool changer is included should be confirmed: the series page calls it optional

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the difference between the Fryer MB-10R and the MB-10Q?

The head. The MB-10Q has a manual quill, a 10 hp (7.5 kW) peak motor with a 2 speed gear box and a top speed of 4,500 rpm. The MB-10R has a rigid spindle head, 12 hp (8.9 kW) peak, 60 - 8,000 rpm and a tool storage capacity of 12 in Fryer's table. Travels, table size and operating dimensions are the same.

02 Does the MB-10R come with a tool changer?

Fryer's specification table lists a tool storage capacity of 12, with 20 optional, and a 7 seconds tool change. The series page describes the tool changer as optional and the options sheet lists both carousel changers with option numbers, so ask Fryer what the quoted configuration includes.

03 What size tools can the MB-10R changer hold?

The table gives a maximum tool length of 11.8 in (300 mm), a maximum tool weight of 15.4 lb and a maximum adjacent tool diameter of 5.5 in (140 mm). The options sheet describes the carousel changers as holding up to 3.20” diameter tools, 11” long.

04 Can the MB-10R still be moved by hand?

Yes, electronically. Fryer lists electronic handles for manual movement, a "Do One" semi-automatic mode and a handwheel run feature. The mechanical X and Y handles and the manual quill belong to the MB-Q series, not to this model.
