Overview

The Sugino SC-V30a is a compact 30-taper vertical machining center that puts 700 mm (27.6 in) of X travel, 540 mm (21.3 in) of Y and 400 mm (15.7 in) of Z inside a body 1,440 mm wide. X and Z are column traverse and Y is table traverse. Sugino describes the result as the installation space of a #30 machine with a machining area comparable to a #40 machine, and names large aluminum components for EV-related parts as the reason it was developed.

The table is 750 × 400 mm (29.5 × 15.7 in) and carries 600 kg (1,323 lb), which is a lot for this spindle size. The distance from table top to spindle end runs from 270 to 670 mm, so tall fixtures and a rotary table have room. Sugino states that with an A-axis rotary table the machine supports a standard swing diameter of φ500.

Speed is where the figures stand out. The spindle reaches 12,000 rpm and gets to 10,000 rpm in 0.16 sec, with 34 kW (45.6 hp) on the 1-minute rating and 9 kW (12.1 hp) continuous. Rapids are 60 m/min (2,362 ipm), with 1.3 G of acceleration on X and Y and 1.7 G on Z. Those numbers suit short cuts and many repositioning moves. The continuous rating tells you this is not a machine for long, heavy roughing passes, and tapping is limited to 8,000 rpm.

The magazine holds 30 tools on BBT30 shanks. Tools are limited to Φ65 × 250 mm and 2.5 kg, or 3.5 kg at low-speed ATC, and a 15-tool magazine specification raises the diameter to Φ120. Sugino keeps the tool magazine and the feed axes outside the machining area and uses a center trough bed to move chips out. The machine weighs 4,800 kg (10,582 lb) and needs 25 kVA at 3-phase AC 200V for the body alone.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 700 mm (27.6 in) of X travel and 540 mm (21.3 in) of Y in a body 1,440 mm wide
  • Spindle reaches 10,000 rpm in 0.16 sec and tops out at 12,000 rpm, with 34 kW (45.6 hp) on the 1-minute rating
  • Rapid traverse of 60 m/min (2,362 ipm) with 1.3 G on X and Y and 1.7 G on Z
  • Table load of 600 kg (1,323 lb) on a 750 × 400 mm table
  • Positioning of 0.004 mm and repeatability of ±0.001 mm in the maker's table
  • Tool magazine and feed axes are separated from the machining area, and a center trough bed carries chips away

Limitations

  • Continuous spindle rating is 9 kW (12.1 hp); the 34 kW figure applies for 1 minute only
  • Tools in the 30-tool magazine are limited to Φ65 mm in diameter and 2.5 kg, or 3.5 kg at low-speed ATC
  • Power supply is listed as 3-phase AC 200V only, so other mains voltages need a transformer
  • Maximum tap rotation speed is 8,000 min-1, below the 12,000 min-1 spindle maximum

Best For

Large aluminum castings that need #40-size travel from a #30 spindle Short-cycle drilling, tapping and light milling with many tool changes Fixture and rotary-table setups up to the 600 kg (1,323 lb) table limit Lines where machine width decides how many spindles fit on the floor

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What are the travels of the Sugino SC-V30a?

X is 700 mm (27.6 in) and Z is 400 mm (15.7 in), both by column traverse, and Y is 540 mm (21.3 in) by table traverse. The table working area is 750 × 400 mm (29.5 × 15.7 in) and the distance from table top to spindle end is 270 to 670 mm.

02 How powerful is the SC-V30a spindle?

The NT30 spindle runs to 12,000 rpm in the high acceleration and deceleration specification. Sugino rates it 34 kW (45.6 hp) for 1 minute and 9 kW (12.1 hp) continuous, and gives 0.16 sec as the acceleration time to 10,000 rpm. Maximum tap rotation speed is 8,000 rpm.

03 How many tools does the SC-V30a hold, and how big can they be?

The standard magazine holds 30 BBT30 tools with memory random selection. Maximum tool dimensions are Φ65 × 250 mm and maximum weight is 2.5 kg, or 3.5 kg at low-speed ATC. With the 15-tool magazine specification the maximum becomes Φ120 × 250 mm.

04 How much floor space and power does the SC-V30a need?

The body measures 1,440 × 3,245 × 2,720 mm (56.7 × 127.8 × 107.1 in) in width, length and height and weighs 4,800 kg (10,582 lb). Power supply is 3-phase AC 200V with a capacity of 25 kVA for the body only, and air supply pressure is 0.4 to 0.6 MPa.

05 How does the SC-V30a deal with chips?

Sugino separates the tool magazine and the feed axes completely from the machining area and removes wiring and piping from inside it. The bed has a center trough, which the maker says doubles chip discharge capability compared with conventional machines, even though this is a vertical machine.
