Overview

The AWEA BM-850II is a box-way vertical machining center with 850 mm (33.5 in) of X travel, 650 mm (25.6 in) of Y and 610 mm (24.0 in) of Z. It is the smallest of the BM-II machines, the line AWEA builds for heavy cutting, and the only one whose table load is under a tonne: 850 kg (1,874 lb) on a 1,050 x 650 mm (41.3 x 25.6 in) table.

Box ways on all three axes define the series. AWEA describes them as precisely ground and heat treated, with hand scraping on the key contact surfaces. Sliding ways damp vibration well in interrupted cuts and under large cutters, and they are slower than rolling guides. The numbers show it: 30 m/min (1,181 ipm) rapids in X and Y, 24 m/min (945 ipm) in Z.

As listed, the spindle is a belt-drive unit turning 8,000 rpm with a 7.5 / 11 kW (10.1 / 14.8 hp) motor. BT40 is standard and BT50 optional. That combination suits steel and cast iron at moderate speeds; it is not a spindle for small tools in aluminium. Shops that want the same footprint with higher speed should look at the AF-1060II, a linear-guide machine with a 12,000 rpm direct-drive spindle.

For its travel the BM-850II is heavy at 6,700 kg (14,771 lb). The 24-tool arm type magazine takes tools up to 7 kg (15 lb). Power requirement is 25 kVA, the control is the FANUC Oi -MF Plus, and a single screw type chip auger arrangement with Y-axis chip augers is standard on this size.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Box ways on all three axes, ground and heat treated, for heavy and interrupted cutting
  • 650 mm (25.6 in) of Y travel on the smallest model of the line
  • 6,700 kg (14,771 lb) of machine weight behind an 850 mm (33.5 in) X travel
  • BT50 available as an option to the standard BT40 taper
  • Low 25 kVA power requirement

Limitations

  • Spindle speed tops out at 8,000 rpm with a belt drive
  • Spindle motor is 7.5 / 11 kW (10.1 / 14.8 hp), smaller than the 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp) of the BM-1400 MAX
  • Rapids of 30 m/min (1,181 ipm) lag the 48 m/min (1,890 ipm) of the AF-1060II
  • Table load of 850 kg (1,874 lb) is the lowest in the BM-II series

Best For

Steel and cast iron parts within 850 x 650 mm Interrupted cuts and face milling where box ways damp vibration Toolroom and die work at moderate spindle speeds Shops with a 25 kVA supply limit

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Does the AWEA BM-850II use box ways or linear guides?

Box ways. AWEA states that the three axes of the BM-II series are equipped with box ways that are precisely ground and thoroughly heat treated, and that key contact surfaces are hand scraped. The AF-II series is the maker's linear guide way line.

02 What spindle is fitted to the BM-850II?

AWEA's table lists a belt-drive spindle with 8,000 rpm and a 7.5 / 11 kW (10.1 / 14.8 hp) motor. The taper is BT40 with BT50 as an option. The maker also mentions gear spindle and high speed spindle options for the series, so ask what can be ordered on this size.

03 What are the travels and table load of the BM-850II?

Travels are 850 mm (33.5 in) in X, 650 mm (25.6 in) in Y and 610 mm (24.0 in) in Z. The table is 1,050 x 650 mm (41.3 x 25.6 in) and carries 850 kg (1,874 lb). Spindle nose to table top distance is 125 ~ 735 mm (4.9 ~ 28.9 in).

04 How does the BM-850II differ from the BM-1020II?

The BM-1020II has 1,020 mm (40.2 in) of X travel, a 1,120 x 650 mm (44.1 x 25.6 in) table and a 1,000 kg (2,205 lb) load rating, and weighs 6,900 kg (15,212 lb). Y and Z travel, spindle, rapids and tooling are the same as on the BM-850II.
