Overview

Watch plates and bridges are what the Willemin-Macodel 401S2 is built around. It is a 3-axis machining center with a vertical spindle, 250 mm of X, 200 mm of Y and 310 mm of Z, and a grooved table of 400 x 280 mm.

Axis performance separates it from the smaller 301S2. The linear axes feed at up to 40 m/min and resolve 0.0125 µm. The table has 3 grooves of 12-H8 spaced 80 mm apart, and Willemin-Macodel quotes a machinable surface of 250 x 200 mm, which is simply the X and Y travel.

The spindle takes HSK-E40 tooling at 30,000 min-1. In brackets the table offers HSK-A40 or CAPTO C4 and 42,000 min-1, with grease in place of air-oil lubrication. Tool changes are quick: 0.8 sec tool to tool and under 3 sec chip to chip, from a magazine of 48 tools that can be specified with 72 or 96. For plates with many small drilled and milled features, that magazine size and change time matter more than raw feed speed.

Two controls are named, a FANUC 0i-MF PLUS iHMI Pro and, in brackets, a HEIDENHAIN TNC 7. The machine measures 1,685 x 1,795 x 2,305 mm on 3 m² of floor. The other options include various clamps and a spindle reduction tube under the heading of a horizontal A axis, along with a chip conveyor and a robot or manipulator.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the working area of the 401S2?

Travels are 250 mm in X, 200 mm in Y and 310 mm in Z. The grooved table is 400 x 280 mm, larger than the travel, and Willemin-Macodel gives 250 x 200 mm as the surface area of the parts it machines.

02 Which spindle options does the 401S2 list?

The base spindle is HSK-E40 at 30,000 min-1 with air-oil lubrication. In brackets the page lists HSK-A40 or CAPTO C4 interfaces, 42,000 min-1 and grease lubrication. DTS dynamic thermal stabilization is integrated on the motorized spindle either way.

03 How many tools does the 401S2 hold?

48 as the base magazine, with 72 and 96 in brackets. Tool-to-tool changeover is 0.8 sec and chip-to-chip is under 3 sec. Tool management is integrated and tool breakage detection runs in masked time.

04 How does the 401S2 compare with the 501S2?

The 501S2 has 400 mm of X and 385 mm of Z on the same 200 mm of Y, feeds at 60 m/min and takes up to 120 tools, on a floor area of 4 m². The 401S2 has 250 mm of X, 310 mm of Z, 40 m/min and up to 96 tools on 3 m².
