Overview

The Accuway UM-160S breaks the pattern of the BT40 range in one direction: height. Z travel is 850 mm (33.5 in) and the spindle nose reaches 1,000 mm (39.4 in) above the table, from a minimum of 150 mm. The UM-120, the next tallest BT40 model in the line, lists 600 mm (23.6 in) of Z. X is 1,600 mm (63.0 in) and Y is 850 mm (33.5 in).

Everything structural is scaled to match. Ball screws are 50/50/50 mm (2.0/2.0/2.0 in), the largest in the group. The table is 1,700 x 950 mm (66.9 x 37.4 in) with 9 T-slots and a 2,000 kg (4,409 lb) rating, and the machine weighs 14,000 kg (30,864 lb), against 9,500 kg (20,944 lb) for the UM-150.

The spindle, though, is the familiar one. It is BT40, 10,000 rpm with 12,000 rpm in brackets, Belt (Direct), and 15/18.5 kW (20.1/24.8 hp) continuous and 30 min. A tall Z with a 40-taper means long tool overhang is likely, and the 300 mm (11.8 in) tool length and 7 kg (15 lb) weight limits apply as on the small machines. Deep cavities are reached by moving the head, not by long tools.

Roller guideways and 4/4/7 kW feed motors move the axes at 30 m/min (1,181 in/min). Control is a FANUC 0i-M with AICC II. Accuway also lists a UM-160 in its BT-50 group for those who need the heavier taper.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 850 mm (33.5 in) of Z travel and up to 1,000 mm (39.4 in) from spindle nose to table
  • 1,700 x 950 mm (66.9 x 37.4 in) table with 9 T-slots, rated for 2,000 kg (4,409 lb)
  • 50/50/50 mm (2.0/2.0/2.0 in) ball screws with roller guideways
  • 1,600 x 850 mm of X and Y travel on a 14,000 kg (30,864 lb) machine
  • 15/18.5 kW (20.1/24.8 hp) spindle motor as listed

Limitations

  • BT40 spindle and a 7 kg (15 lb) tool limit on a machine of this size
  • Maximum tool length is 300 mm (11.8 in) despite the 850 mm Z
  • Needs 4.4 x 3.2 m of floor and 3.2 m of height
  • Cutting feed rate is 12 m/min (472 in/min), unchanged from the small frames

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What are the travels of the Accuway UM-160S?

1,600 mm (63.0 in) in X, 850 mm (33.5 in) in Y and 850 mm (33.5 in) in Z. The distance from spindle nose to table is 150~1,000 mm (5.9~39.4 in). The table is 1,700 x 950 mm (66.9 x 37.4 in).

02 How much weight can the UM-160S table carry?

2,000 kg (4,409 lb). The T-slot row reads 9 x 18 x 100 mm, so there are nine 18 mm slots at a 100 mm pitch across the 950 mm width for clamping large or multiple workpieces.

03 Why would someone choose the UM-160S over the UM-150?

For Z and load. The UM-150 lists 550 mm (21.7 in) of Z and 1,500 kg (3,307 lb) on a 1,600 x 770 mm table. The UM-160S lists 850 mm of Z, 2,000 kg and a 1,700 x 950 mm table, with larger 50 mm ball screws. Spindle and motor are the same.

04 What spindle and tool changer does the UM-160S use?

A BT40 spindle at 10,000 rpm, with 12,000 rpm in brackets, driven by a 15/18.5 kW (20.1/24.8 hp) motor. The arm type changer is listed at 24, with 30/32 bracketed; tools can be 75 mm (3.0 in) in diameter, or 150 mm (5.9 in) without adjacent tools.
