Overview

The Hartford HSA-528 is a five-metre double-column machining center with a 5,000 x 2,500 mm (196.9 x 98.4 in) table rated for 20,000 kg (44,092 lb). X travel is 5,000 mm (196.9 in) and Y travel 2,800 mm (110.2 in).

Five metres is the length from which Hartford fits X-axis ballscrew support as standard. A ballscrew is a long, slender shaft, and its own weight makes it sag between its bearings; the longer the screw, the more the sag and the lower the speed at which it starts to whip. Supporting it along its length, Hartford says, improves positioning accuracy and the life of the screw.

Under the table there are three linear guideways on X. Above it, a slant cross-beam carries a ram on four guideways with 780 mm of Z travel, or 1,000 mm or 1,200 mm as options.

The #50 spindle can be a gear head (6,000 / 8,000 rpm), a DDS unit (10,000 / 12,000 rpm) or a built-in motor spindle (12,000 rpm). Motors: 15 / 18.5 kW, or optionally 18.5 / 22 kW, 22 / 26 kW or 30 /37 kW. Hartford says its spindles are self-made, with deflection within 5μm. Up to 60 tools are available, with 32 as the base magazine.
