Overview

The Johnford SV-41H pairs a geared BT/CAT-50 spindle with 1,050 mm (41.3 in) of X travel. Spindle speed is 60~6,000 rpm and the motor is 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp) on a Hi-Lo gearbox, the same head Johnford fits to every H model in the SV series.

On this frame the heavy spindle makes more sense than on the shortest one. A 1,200 x 600 mm (47.2 x 23.6 in) table gives room to clamp a casting or a weldment properly and still traverse a large face mill across it. Y and Z travel are 610 mm (24 in) each, and the nose-to-table distance is 100~710 mm (3.94~28 in). Table capacity is 1,200 kg (2,640 lb).

Buyers should look hard at the tool data. 15 kg (33 lb) per tool and 400 mm (15.7 in) of length are generous. Diameter is 125 mm (5 in) in a full magazine and 250 mm (9.8 in) when neighbouring pockets are left empty, which a large face mill or a boring head will require. With only 20 pockets in the standard armless changer, a job that needs several big cutters can run short of positions quickly. The 24 and 32 tool arm type changers on the option list address that.

At 7,500 kg (16,500 lb) the SV-41H is heavier than the 40-taper SV-41 at 7,000 kg (15,400 lb), and at 2,978 mm it stands slightly taller. Its footprint of 2,990 x 3,420 mm is the same.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Geared 50-taper spindle, 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp), on a 1,200 x 600 mm (47.2 x 23.6 in) table
  • Tool weight up to 15 kg (33 lb) and tool length up to 400 mm (15.7 in)
  • Oil cooler for spindle and gearbox is a standard accessory
  • Rapids of 30 / 30 / 20 m/min (1,181 / 1,181 / 787 ipm) are the same as on the 40-taper model

Limitations

  • 6,000 rpm maximum on the standard spindle limits small-tool work
  • 20-tool armless changer as standard; large cutters need adjacent pockets empty
  • Table load of 1,200 kg (2,640 lb) is modest for a 50-taper machine
  • Z travel of 610 mm (24 in) is shared with the 40-taper model although tools can be 400 mm (15.7 in) long
06

Best For

Face milling and boring of castings up to about 1,050 x 610 mm Steel plate and weldment work that needs 50-taper rigidity Heavy drilling and tapping below 6,000 rpm

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does the H mean on the Johnford SV-41H?

In the SV series table the H models are the 50-taper versions. The SV-41H has a BT/CAT-50 spindle at 60~6,000 rpm with an 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp) Hi-Lo gear drive, where the SV-41 has a BT/CAT-40 spindle at 60~10,000 rpm.

02 How many tools does the SV-41H hold?

The standard changer is armless with 20 tools. Arm type changers with 24 or 32 tools are optional in the table, and the option list goes on to 40 and 60-tool arm type magazines.

03 Can the SV-41H run faster than 6,000 rpm?

With an optional spindle, yes. Johnford lists cartridge spindles at 8,000 or 10,000 rpm in BT, CAT or BBT 50, and the option list names a 10,000 rpm built-in spindle for HSK A100.

04 What are the dimensions and weight of the SV-41H?

2,990 x 3,420 x 2,978 mm (117.7 x 134.6 x 117.2 in), length by width by height, and 7,500 kg (16,500 lb). The 40-taper SV-41 weighs 7,000 kg (15,400 lb).
