Overview

Fryer's MC-80B is a long-bed box way vertical with 80 in (2,032 mm) of X travel and a 30 x 93 in (762 x 2,362 mm) table. From this size up the MC-B series changes character. Ballscrews are 1.97 in (50 mm) against 1.57 in (40 mm) on the MC-60B, and the cutting feed rate tops out at 400 ipm (10.2 m/min) where the MC-60B allows 900 ipm (22.9 m/min).

Those feed figures tell a buyer what the machine is for. It is not a fast machine, and cycle times on parts with many short moves will show it. What it offers instead is mass and reach: 23,000 lb (10,433 kg) of machine, a table rated 5,500 lb (2,495 kg), and 36 in (914 mm) from spindle centre to column.

Y travel is 35 in (889 mm) and Z is 30 in (762 mm) as standard. An extended 40 in (1,016 mm) Y travel and an extended 34 in (864 mm) Z travel are on the options sheet. Spindle nose to table is 34 to 4 in (864 - 102 mm) on the standard machine.

Chips are a bigger subject on a table this long. Fryer lists a dual chip auger system for machines with 70" - 100" of X travel as an option, and the base table shows a 90 gal (341 L) coolant tank. The spindle is the series CAT 40 unit, 30 hp (22.4 kW) peak and 60 - 8,500 rpm, with CAT 50 optional. The door opens 81 in (2,057 mm).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 80 in (2,032 mm) of X travel over a 30 x 93 in (762 x 2,362 mm) table
  • Table load of 5,500 lb (2,495 kg), evenly distributed
  • 1.97 in (50 mm) ballscrews, larger than the 1.57 in (40 mm) screws of the MC-60B
  • 35 in (889 mm) of Y as standard, with 40 in (1,016 mm) available as an extended travel option
  • 81 in (2,057 mm) door opening

Limitations

  • The standard changer takes tools up to 15.4 lb (7.0 kg) and 3.2 in (81 mm) in diameter, small for a machine with 80 in (2,032 mm) of X
  • Cutting feed rate is limited to 400 ipm (10.2 m/min)
  • Operating footprint is 211 x 122 in (5,359 x 3,099 mm) with a weight of 23,000 lb (10,433 kg)
  • Table load is the same 5,500 lb (2,495 kg) as the MC-100B despite the shorter table
06

Best For

Long weldments, rails and frames up to 80 in (2,032 mm) Several fixtures or parts in a row on a 93 in (2,362 mm) table Heavy, slow cuts in steel where feed rate is not the limit Large plates using 35 in (889 mm) or more of Y

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Why is the Fryer MC-80B's cutting feed rate lower than on the smaller MC-B models?

Fryer's table gives a cutting feed rate of 0.001 to 400 ipm (up to 10.2 m/min) for the MC-80B, against up to 900 ipm (22.9 m/min) for the MC-60B, and it does not give a reason. The table also shows that this model uses 1.97 in (50 mm) ballscrews and a 30 x 93 in (762 x 2,362 mm) table rated 5,500 lb (2,495 kg).

02 What are the Y and Z travels of the MC-80B?

Standard Y travel is 35 in (889 mm) and standard Z travel is 30 in (762 mm). The options sheet lists an extended 40 in (1,016 mm) Y travel, which puts the spindle 41 in from the column, and an extended 34 in (864 mm) Z travel.

03 How does the MC-80B compare with the MC-100B?

The MC-100B has 100 in (2,540 mm) of X and a 30 x 112 in (762 x 2,845 mm) table, with a 105 in (2,667 mm) door opening and a weight of 26,000 lb (11,794 kg). The MC-80B is shorter, has an 81 in (2,057 mm) door opening and weighs 23,000 lb (10,433 kg). Y, Z, table load, cutting feed rate and spindle are the same rows for both.

04 How are chips removed on the MC-80B?

The options sheet lists a dual chip auger system and a dual chip conveyor system for machines with 70" - 100" of X travel, plus a high pressure washdown system that flushes chips into the auger or conveyor. The coolant tank holds 90 gal (341 L) and the pump flow is 9 gpm (34 L/min).
