Overview
The Mazak VC-Ez is an entry-level vertical machining center designed to give job shops and smaller manufacturers access to Mazak build quality and the MAZATROL control system at a more accessible price point. The VC-Ez series targets shops stepping up from manual mills or older CNC equipment to a modern platform without the full investment of a VCN or VTC-series machine.
The VC-Ez 20 offers travel of 762 x 410 x 460 mm (30 x 16.1 x 18.1 in) with a BT 40 spindle turning at 10,000 RPM and delivering 11 kW (15 hp). The 20-station arm-type automatic tool changer provides fast tool changes for multi-operation jobs. Table size is 900 x 400 mm (35.4 x 15.7 in) with a maximum load of 400 kg (882 lb).
The machine runs on the MAZATROL SmoothEz control, a streamlined version of the SmoothG specifically designed for the entry-level market. SmoothEz retains the conversational programming that makes MAZATROL popular but simplifies the interface for operators who may not have extensive CNC experience. The touchscreen interface includes setup guidance and 3D simulation.
Rapid traverse hits 36 m/min on all axes, which is competitive for machines in this price class. Roller guides on all three axes provide good positioning accuracy and speed. The compact footprint keeps floor space requirements manageable for smaller shops.
The VC-Ez competes with the Haas VF-2, Brother Speedio S500X1, and Doosan DNM 4500 in the entry-to-mid-level VMC market. New pricing starts around $75,000 to $110,000, making it one of the most affordable paths into the Mazak ecosystem. Used VC-Ez machines are beginning to appear in the $40,000 to $65,000 range.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Most affordable entry into the Mazak ecosystem, bringing MAZATROL conversational programming to shops that cannot justify VCN or VTC pricing
- SmoothEz control simplifies the interface for operators stepping up from manual machines or basic CNC equipment
- 10,000 RPM BT 40 spindle handles aluminum and mild steel work common in job shop environments
- 20-station arm-type ATC provides faster tool changes than the carousel systems found on competing entry-level VMCs
- Compact footprint fits into smaller shops without consuming excessive floor space
- 36 m/min rapid traverse is competitive for the price class, keeping non-cutting time reasonable
- Roller guides on all axes deliver good positioning accuracy and acceleration for general-purpose machining
Limitations
- 11 kW (15 hp) spindle is less powerful than the Haas VF-2 (22.4 kW) and limits heavy cutting in steel and cast iron
- 762 mm X-travel provides adequate but not generous work envelope for shops running larger parts
- Entry-level positioning means fewer options and configurations compared to the VCN and VTC lines
- SmoothEz is a simplified control; shops that outgrow it will want to move to SmoothG on higher-end Mazak machines
- Smaller table load of 400 kg limits fixture weight and part size for heavier workpieces

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New VC-Ez machines start around $75,000 for base configurations and reach $110,000 with options like through-spindle coolant, probing, and chip conveyors. This makes it one of the most affordable Mazak vertical machining centers available.
02
Both target job shops in a similar price range. The Haas VF-2 offers more spindle power (22.4 kW vs 11 kW) and slightly more Y-travel. The Mazak VC-Ez counters with MAZATROL conversational programming, faster tool changes with the arm-type ATC, and roller guide construction.
03
SmoothEz is a streamlined version of the MAZATROL SmoothG control designed for entry-level machines. It retains the core conversational programming capability but simplifies the interface for operators with less CNC experience. It supports both MAZATROL conversational and EIA/ISO G-code programming.
04
Yes, the VC-Ez machines mild steel and alloy steels effectively for light-to-medium cutting. The 11 kW spindle limits aggressive roughing in harder materials, but for typical job shop work including drilling, tapping, and contouring in steel, it performs well.
