Overview
The Hwacheon SIRIUS-650 is a gear-driven BBT-50 vertical machining center with 1,300 mm (51.2 in) of X, 650 mm (25.6 in) of Y and 650 mm (25.6 in) of Z travel, a long 1,800 x 650 mm (70.9 x 25.6 in) table rated 1,500 kg (3,307 lb) and a spindle at 5,000 or 8,000 rpm rated 18.5 / 11 kW (24.8 / 14.8 hp).
The gear drive is what sets it apart in the SIRIUS range. Where the SIRIUS-UX uses a built-in motor at 12,000 or 15,000 rpm and 30 / 25 kW (40.2 / 33.5 hp), the SIRIUS-650 runs a geared 50-taper spindle at lower speed, the layout traditionally used for face milling, heavy drilling and tapping in steel and cast iron. Lubrication follows the speed: grease on the 5K spindle, oil-jet on the 8K. Both use a Ø100 mm (Ø3.9 in) bearing and an oil-cooled jacket.
At 1,800 mm (70.9 in) the table is longer than the 1,300 mm (51.2 in) X stroke, which leaves room for a vise or a second fixture at one end while the other is machined. Five 18 mm T-slots at 125 mm pitch run along it, and the spindle nose works from 200 to 850 mm (7.9 to 33.5 in) above it. Rapids are 15 m/min (591 ipm) on X and Y and 12 m/min (472 ipm) on Z.
The standard machine has a 24-tool memory-random magazine with tools up to Ø110 mm (Ø4.3 in) beside full pockets or Ø220 mm (Ø8.7 in) with neighbours removed, 350 mm (13.8 in) long and 15 kg (33 lb). A version without the tool changer is also listed, weighing 11,700 kg (25,794 lb) against 12,200 kg (26,896 lb) for the ATC machine; it suits shops that change tools by hand on one-off work. BBT-50 holders are standard, CAT-50 optional.
