Overview

The Johnford DMC-1600 is the entry model of the larger DMC frame, a double column machining center with 1,300 mm (51.2 in) between the columns and travels of 1,600 mm (63 in) in X, 1,300 mm (51.2 in) in Y and 800 mm in Z. The spindle is BT-40 / CAT-40 and the table, 1,700 x 1,100 mm (66.9 x 43.3 in), carries 6,000 kg (13,200 lb).

This is a different machine from the DMC-1500 one step below it, despite the similar name. The DMC-1500 weighs 15,000 kg (33,000 lb) and has 900 mm (35.43 in) of Y. The DMC-1600 weighs 20,400 kg (45,000 lb), and almost all of the extra goes into a wider bridge and a table 1,100 mm deep. In exchange the axes are slower, 15 / 15 / 12 m/min (591 / 591 / 472 ipm), and the cutting feed range ends at 10,000 mm/min.

Nearly square travels make the DMC-1600 a good fit for large mold bases, plates and frames machined in one clamping. A part 1,300 mm wide passes between the columns with nothing to spare, so actual part width has to allow for clamps. Spindle nose to table distance is 150~950 mm (5.9~37.4 in).

The 40-taper spindle comes as a 7.5 / 11 kW (10.1 / 14.8 hp) geared drive at 8,000 rpm, or as a 17 / 20 kW (22.8 / 26.8 hp) built-in unit at 15,000, 18,000 or 20,000 rpm. On a machine this heavy the 40-taper version is the finishing and light-alloy choice. Shops cutting steel in volume should compare the DMC-1600H, which has a 15 / 18.5 kW (20.1 / 24.8 hp) No.50 drive in the same frame.
