Overview

Y travel is where the AXA VSC 3 - XTS departs from the smaller VSC models. The standard value is 700 mm (27.6 in), and 900 mm, 1,000 mm or 1,100 mm can be ordered. Z is 850 mm (33.5 in) as standard with 950 mm or 1,200 mm optional, and X runs from 1,760 mm to 9,000 mm. The result is an SK 40 travelling column machine with a work envelope that can be configured wide and tall as well as long.

Because AXA sizes the clamping surface as X travel plus 400 mm by the Y travel, choosing a wider Y also means a wider table. Five T-slots are standard and a sixth is optional. The table is rated at 1,200 kg/m².

The magazine has the highest ceiling in the VSC series. From 22 pockets as delivered, the XTS system extends to 288 on this model, which is enough to keep the tools for many different parts on the machine at once. AXA points out that pockets inside a tower can be added later and that the magazine can be loaded while the spindle is cutting.

The spindle side is familiar from the VSC 2 - XTS: drive no. 110 with 143 Nm and 30 kW at 40% DC as standard, and drives no. 100, 111 and 113 as options, the last with 255 Nm. Tool change takes approx. 5 s and rapids are 40/40/30 m/min.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Y travel of 700 mm as standard, with 900 mm, 1,000 mm and 1,100 mm as options
  • Z travel can be extended from 850 mm to 950 mm or 1,200 mm
  • XTS magazine expandable up to 288 pockets, the largest figure in the VSC table
  • Table rated at 1,200 kg/m² with five T-slots, six optional
  • Four SK 40 drives to choose from, up to 255 Nm with drive no. 113

Limitations

  • The larger Y and Z travels are optional features, not the base machine
  • SK 40 tooling limits cutters to 85 mm in diameter, or 135 mm with free adjacent pockets
  • Even the strongest drive, no. 113, has less torque than the 286 Nm standard drive of the VSC 3 - XTS50
  • Feed force is 9,000 N on every configuration
06

Best For

Wide plates and frames that need up to 1,100 mm of Y travel Job shops that keep a large tool inventory in the magazine Light-alloy and general steel work on SK 40 or HSK A63 Long-bed machining with rotary tables or clamping bridges

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What Y and Z travels can the VSC 3 - XTS be ordered with?

Y is 700 mm (27.6 in) as standard, with 900 mm (35.4 in), 1,000 mm (39.4 in) or 1,100 mm (43.3 in) as optional features. Z is 850 mm (33.5 in), optionally 950 mm (37.4 in) or 1,200 mm (47.2 in). With the taller Z option the spindle nose can stand up to 1,130 mm above the table.

02 How many tools can the VSC 3 - XTS carry?

22 pockets as standard and up to 288 as an option, a figure AXA footnotes with the example of 3 fully equipped towers. The towers stand outside the working area, and a transport unit moving at up to 120 m/min brings each tool to the spindle position.

03 How does it differ from the VSC 2 - XTS?

The VSC 2 - XTS has a fixed 600 mm of Y, a four-slot table rated at 1,000 kg/m² and a magazine that extends to 216 pockets. The VSC 3 - XTS starts at 700 mm of Y with wider options, has five T-slots rated at 1,200 kg/m², and extends to 288 pockets.

04 What accuracy is stated for the machine?

Positioning accuracy is ± 0.015 mm per 1,000 mm per axis X/Y/Z, with ± 0.0075 mm as an optional feature. Repeating accuracy is ± 0.005 mm. AXA fits direct measuring systems on the X, Y and Z axes.
