Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Fryer VB-60 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Fryer VB-60 is an open, unenclosed vertical machining center with 60 x 30 x 28 in (1,524 x 762 x 711 mm) of travel and a 24 x 73 in (610 x 1,854 mm) table. Fryer designs the VB series without an enclosure on purpose: large parts are lowered straight onto the table by crane or fork truck, with nothing to reach over. The VB-60 is the smallest of five sizes and the quickest of them.
Speed first, because it sets this model apart. Rapids are 1,000 ipm (25.4 m/min) in X and Y and 700 ipm (17.8 m/min) in Z. The VB-80 is listed at 600 ipm (15.2 m/min) and the VB-100 at 400 ipm (10.2 m/min). Cutting feed goes up to 600 ipm (15.2 m/min).
Construction is box way with Turcite B liners, on a machine weighing 15,000 lb (6,804 kg). The spindle is a CAT 40 or BT-40 unit with 30 hp (22.4 kW) peak and 155 ft-lb (210 Nm) at 350 rpm, running 60 - 8,000 rpm in 1 range. Fryer's table lists a 20 tool carousel changer with a 7 seconds tool change, and arm type changers for 24, 40 or 60 tools with a 3 seconds change as options.
An open machine has consequences that the table makes visible. Coolant capacity is given as 20 gal (76 L), with 90 gal in brackets, and a table mounted splash guard and a full machine guard are separate options for this size. Positioning accuracy is +/- 0.0003 in (0.0076 mm), a little wider than on Fryer's enclosed MC-B machines. Operating space is 170 x 100 in (4,318 x 2,540 mm).

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Open design for loading large parts straight onto a 24 x 73 in (610 x 1,854 mm) table
- 1,000 ipm (25.4 m/min) X and Y rapids, the fastest in the VB series
- Box way construction with Turcite B liners
- 30 hp (22.4 kW) peak spindle with 155 ft-lb (210 Nm) at 350 rpm
- Full machine guard and splash guard are available for this size
Limitations
- No enclosure on the base machine, so chips and coolant are not contained
- Standard 20 tool carousel changer needs 7 seconds per change
- Peak axis thrust of 3,500 lb is the lowest in the series
- Positioning accuracy is +/- 0.0003 in (0.0076 mm), against +/- 0.0002 in on the MC-60B

Frequently Asked Questions
01
No. Fryer describes the VB series as a high performance machining center without an enclosure, built for easy loading of large parts. A table mounted splash guard with sliding doors and a full machine guard are listed as options for the VB-60 to VB-100.
02
Travels are 60 x 30 x 28 in (1,524 x 762 x 711 mm). The table is 24 x 73 in (610 x 1,854 mm) with 5 T-slots, rated 4,000 lb (1,814 kg) evenly distributed, and its top is 32 in (813 mm) from the floor. Spindle nose to table ranges from 31 to 3 in (787 - 76 mm).
03
Both are box way machines with 60 in (1,524 mm) of X. The MC-60B is enclosed, has a 24 station arm type changer with a 3 seconds change, a table rated 4,500 lb (2,041 kg) and weighs 20,000 lb (9,072 kg). The VB-60 is open, weighs 15,000 lb (6,804 kg), is rated 4,000 lb (1,814 kg) on the table and has a longer 73 in (1,854 mm) table.
04
The table lists a 20 tool carousel with a 7 seconds tool change, and 24, 40 or 60 tool arm type changers with a 3 seconds change as options. Tool limits are printed as 4.10 in (104 mm) in diameter and 15 in (381 mm) in length, with 3.2 in and 13 in in brackets for the alternative changer.
