Overview

The AWEA AF-1060II opens the mid-size group of the AF-II vertical machining centers. Travels are 1,060 mm (41.7 in) in X, 650 mm (25.6 in) in Y and 610 mm (24.0 in) in Z over a 1,200 x 650 mm (47.2 x 25.6 in) table. It is the first AF model for which AWEA's table lists a BT50 spindle as an option beside the standard BT40.

Three machines share this casting size. The AF-1250II and AF-1400II keep the same Y, Z, column reach of 710 mm (28.0 in) and rapids, and only lengthen X. Of the three, the AF-1060II has the lowest table load at 700 kg (1,543 lb) and the lowest weight at 6,900 kg (15,212 lb). It also needs 30 kVA, where the AF-1250II and AF-1400II need 35 kVA.

Movement is quick for this class. X and Y traverse at 48 m/min (1,890 ipm), and Z at 36 m/min (1,417 ipm), which is faster in Z than any other group in the range. Positioning accuracy is listed as 0.008 mm and repeatability as 0.006 mm to ISO230-2. The standard spindle is direct-drive, 12,000 rpm, 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp).

For heavier cutting AWEA describes gear spindles for the series: an 8,000 rpm BT40 unit with 280 Nm at 375 rpm, and a 6,000 rpm BT50 unit with a 15 kW motor and 382 Nm at 375 rpm. Gear spindles come with a box way Z-axis. AWEA asks buyers to confirm with the sales representative which models these apply to, so treat them as something to ask about, not as part of the base machine.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 650 mm (25.6 in) of Y travel matched to a 650 mm deep table, 100 mm more than the AF-1000
  • Fastest Z rapid in the AF-II range at 36 m/min (1,417 ipm), with 48 m/min (1,890 ipm) in X and Y
  • BT50 listed as an option alongside the standard BT40 taper
  • Needs only 30 kVA, less than the AF-1250II and AF-1400II on the same frame size
  • Direct-drive 12,000 rpm spindle rated 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp)

Limitations

  • Table load is 700 kg (1,543 lb); the AF-1250II on the same Y and Z carries 1,000 kg (2,205 lb)
  • Positioning accuracy of 0.008 mm is looser than the 0.006 mm listed for the AF-1000
  • Z travel of 610 mm (24.0 in) is shorter than the 635 mm (25.0 in) of the AF-1000
  • Gear spindle availability for this model has to be confirmed with AWEA

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What are the main specifications of the AWEA AF-1060II?

X, Y and Z travels are 1,060 mm (41.7 in), 650 mm (25.6 in) and 610 mm (24.0 in). The table is 1,200 x 650 mm (47.2 x 25.6 in) and carries 700 kg (1,543 lb). The spindle is a direct-drive 12,000 rpm unit, BT40 as standard with BT50 optional, and the machine weighs 6,900 kg (15,212 lb).

02 Is a BT50 spindle available on the AF-1060II?

AWEA's table gives the taper as BT40 with BT50 as an option. For the series, AWEA describes a 6,000 rpm BT50 high torque gear spindle with a 15 kW motor and 382 Nm at 375 rpm, and states that gear spindles are equipped with a box way Z-axis. Which models can take it is something AWEA asks buyers to confirm with their sales representative.

03 How does the AF-1060II compare with the AF-1250II?

The AF-1250II has 1,250 mm (49.2 in) of X travel, a 1,350 x 650 mm (53.1 x 25.6 in) table and a 1,000 kg (2,205 lb) load rating. Y and Z travel, rapids, spindle and accuracy figures are the same as on the AF-1060II. The AF-1250II weighs 7,500 kg (16,534 lb) and needs 35 kVA.

04 What accuracy does AWEA list for the AF-1060II?

Positioning accuracy is 0.008 mm and repeatability is 0.006 mm, both stated to ISO230-2. AWEA attributes the axis performance to roller type linear guide ways, dual-nut ball screws and FANUC αi absolute AC servo motors driving the screws directly.
