Overview

The Chiron FZ 12S is a compact single-spindle vertical machining center, 550 × 400 × 400 mm in X, Y and Z, whose character depends almost entirely on which spindle is ordered. Chiron lists three interfaces, HSK-A40, HSK-A50 and HSK-A63, speeds from 12,000 to 30,000 rpm and torque from 11 to 110 Nm.

A tenfold spread in torque is unusual on one frame. Near 110 Nm the machine can drive face mills and larger drills in steel, inside its 85 mm tool diameter limit. At 30,000 rpm it is a machine for fine tools, where 11 Nm is plenty. The data sheet gives the ranges and not the pairings, so the spindle has to be chosen with Chiron against the real tool list. The twin-spindle DZ 12S shares these travels but is rated only from 15,000 to 24,000 rpm and 29 to 59 Nm, so both extremes exist on the single-spindle machine alone.

The axes are quick for the size. Rapids are 75 m/min throughout and acceleration climbs from 10 m/s² in X to 15 m/s² in Y and 20 m/s² in Z. With 400 mm of Z, most moves are too short to reach the rapid rate, and a 20 m/s² axis is what drilling and tapping cycles reward.

Tools come from a chain magazine with 24 to 128 tools in 2.7 s chip to chip. A tool may be 85 mm in diameter, or 125 mm with the adjacent pockets empty, 250 mm long and 5.0 kg. The FZ 12W has the same travels, spindle range and tool capacity, so the choice between the two rests on something this table does not show.
