Overview

At 11,500 kg (25,353 lb), the Johnford SV-60H is the heaviest machine in the SV series and the one best matched to its own spindle. It is a 50-taper vertical machining center with a BT-50 / CAT-50 spindle at 60~6,000 rpm, an 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp) Hi-Lo gear drive and 1,525 mm (60 in) of X travel.

Mass is what lets a geared 50-taper spindle work properly, and here there is plenty of it under a 1,600 x 700 mm (63 x 27.6 in) table that carries 1,700 kg (3,740 lb). The SV-33H at 7,000 kg (15,400 lb) and the SV-48H at 7,500 kg (16,500 lb) put the same spindle on much lighter frames. For long steel parts, machine bases, press plates and similar work that is roughed with large cutters, this is the SV model to look at first.

Travels in the other axes are 710 mm (28 in) in Y and 630 mm (24.8 in) in Z, with 100~730 mm (3.94~28.7 in) from spindle nose to table. The 20-tool armless changer handles tools of 125 mm (5 in) diameter in adjacent pockets, 250 mm (9.8 in) without adjacent tools, 400 mm (15.7 in) in length and 15 kg (33 lb). All axes rapid at 24 m/min (945 ipm).

One caution on options. The table prints no optional spindle or motor for the SV-60H, whereas the SV-48H column offers 8,000 or 10,000 rpm cartridge spindles and larger motors. The machine needs 3,940 x 3,900 mm (155 x 154 in) of floor and 3,240 mm (128 in) of height, and the standard list covers a full enclosure with interlocks, four screw type chip conveyors and rigid tapping.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Heaviest SV model at 11,500 kg (25,353 lb), carrying a geared BT-50 / CAT-50 spindle
  • 1,525 mm (60 in) X travel with a 1,700 kg (3,740 lb) table load
  • Takes tools up to 15 kg (33 lb), 400 mm (15.7 in) long and 250 mm (9.8 in) in diameter without adjacent tools
  • Full enclosure with interlocks and four screw type chip conveyors with trolley are standard

Limitations

  • 6,000 rpm maximum spindle speed, with no faster option printed for this model
  • 20-tool armless magazine as standard
  • Z travel of 630 mm (24.8 in) is the same as on the much smaller SV-48H
  • Rapids of 24 m/min (945 ipm) are slower in X and Y than on the SV-33H and SV-41H
