Overview
The Haas VF-8/50 is an extra-large 50-taper VMC designed for shops machining long, heavy workpieces in steel, cast iron, and other demanding ferrous materials. With 1,626 x 1,016 x 762 mm (64 x 40 x 30 in) of travel, it offers substantially more Y-axis reach than the VF-7/50 while trading some X-travel.
The 2-speed gearbox spindle delivers 460 Nm (340 ft-lbf) of torque at 700 RPM, maxing out at 7,500 RPM. The 22.4 kW (30 hp) motor is consistent across the 50-taper VF lineup. The wide 1,016 mm (40 in) Y-travel is the standout spec — it allows machining of wide parts, multiple-part setups across the table width, and large mold halves that can't fit on narrower VMCs.
The table measures 1,829 x 914 mm (72 x 36 in) and supports up to 2,268 kg (5,000 lb). That wide table paired with the deep Y-travel makes the VF-8/50 particularly well-suited for wide mold bases and die work where you need to reach across the full workpiece without repositioning.
The 30+1 SMTC is standard with CT/BT 50 taper tools up to 13.6 kg (30 lb). Machine weight comes in around 11,340 kg (25,000 lb), making it one of the heavier VMCs in the Haas lineup. That mass directly benefits cut quality during heavy roughing.
Base price starts around $190,000. The VF-8/50 is the right choice when you need both the 50-taper torque advantage and a wide work envelope. For shops that need more X-travel instead, the VF-7/50 has longer reach in that direction. Specs sourced from Haas Automation published data.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 1,016 mm (40 in) Y-travel is exceptional for a VMC, enabling wide mold bases and multi-part setups
- 460 Nm (340 ft-lbf) torque from 2-speed gearbox handles heavy steel and cast iron roughing
- 1,829 x 914 mm (72 x 36 in) table with 2,268 kg (5,000 lb) load capacity supports large, heavy workpieces
- 11,340 kg (25,000 lb) machine weight provides outstanding vibration damping
- Wide table allows multiple vise stations across the Y-axis for production runs on smaller parts
- 50-taper clamping force maintains rigidity with large-diameter face mills and boring bars
Limitations
- 7,500 RPM max spindle speed is limiting for high-speed aluminum machining — consider the 40-taper VF-8
- Large footprint and 25,000 lb weight require reinforced floors and heavy rigging
- 1,626 mm (64 in) X-travel is shorter than the VF-7/50's 2,134 mm — choose based on part geometry
- 50-taper tooling costs significantly more than 40-taper across the entire tool crib
- Base price around $190K is a substantial investment for shops that don't regularly need 50-taper capability

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Base price starts around $190,000. With through-spindle coolant, probing, chip conveyor, and other common options, expect $220,000-$245,000. The 40-taper VF-8 is significantly less if 50-taper torque isn't required.
02
The VF-8/50 has 203 mm (8 in) more Y-travel (1,016 vs 813 mm) but 508 mm (20 in) less X-travel (1,626 vs 2,134 mm). Both have the same Z-travel, spindle, and tool changer. Choose the VF-8/50 for wide parts; choose the VF-7/50 for long parts.
03
At 1,016 mm (40 in), the VF-8/50 has more Y-travel than most VMCs in its class. This allows machining wide mold halves, large die plates, and running multiple vise stations side-by-side across the table width — operations that would require repositioning on narrower machines.
04
It can machine aluminum, but the 7,500 RPM limit restricts surface footage with smaller tools. Shops primarily running aluminum should consider the 40-taper VF-8 for higher spindle speeds. The /50 is optimized for heavy ferrous material removal.
