Overview
The Hurco VMX30Di is the direct-drive version of the popular VMX30i, widely considered the sweet spot in Hurco's performance lineup. It pairs the VMX30i's proven 30x20x24-inch travel envelope with a 15,000 RPM inline direct-drive spindle, creating what many Hurco owners call the best all-around machine the company makes.
Travels are 762 x 508 x 610 mm (30 x 20 x 24 in), identical to the VMX30i. The spindle is a 15,000 RPM inline direct-drive Big Plus CAT 40 producing 15.7 kW (21 hp) and 119 Nm (88 ft-lbs) of torque. Compared to the belt-driven VMX30i, you get 3,000 more RPM, 3 more horsepower, and significantly smoother rotation above 10K RPM. The tradeoff is lower torque at the spindle nose — 88 vs 157 ft-lbs.
The 40-tool arm-type ATC gives the VMX30Di the same tooling flexibility that distinguishes the VMX series from the VM line. Table is 1,020 x 508 mm (40 x 20 in) with a 1,500 kg (3,300 lb) max load. The hybrid guide construction — roller guides on X and Y, box way on Z — balances speed and rigidity.
Rapids hit 38 m/min (1,496 ipm) on X and Y, 32 m/min (1,260 ipm) on Z. At approximately 5,300 kg (11,684 lb), the VMX30Di matches the VMX30i's weight almost exactly. WinMax control provides the same conversational programming system that makes Hurco machines productive from day one.
The direct-drive spindle shines on semi-finishing and finishing passes in aluminum, where the lack of belt vibration produces measurably better Ra surface finish values. It also excels with small-diameter endmills at high RPM — 1/4" carbide at 12,000-15,000 RPM cuts cleaner and lasts longer than on a belt-driven machine.
Pricing runs $100,000-$130,000 new, roughly $10K more than the belt-driven VMX30i. Used VMX30Di machines from 2016-2021 trade in the $55,000-$85,000 range. For shops running a mix of aluminum and light steel, the VMX30Di offers the best balance of speed and capability in Hurco's lineup.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 15,000 RPM direct-drive spindle produces noticeably better surface finish than the belt-driven VMX30i above 10K RPM
- 21 hp with no belt losses delivers more usable power to the cutting edge than the spec suggests
- 40-tool ATC supports complex multi-operation jobs and reduces setup time between parts
- 762 mm (30 in) X and 610 mm (24 in) Z travel cover the most common job shop part sizes
- Zero belt maintenance reduces lifetime ownership cost and eliminates a common wear item
- Same proven hybrid roller/box way construction as the VMX30i for rigidity and accuracy
Limitations
- 119 Nm (88 ft-lbs) torque is 44% less than the VMX30i's 213 Nm, limiting heavy steel roughing
- $10K premium over the VMX30i is hard to justify if most work is steel
- 15K RPM is still modest compared to 20-30K HSM platforms for true high-speed machining
- Hurco dealer coverage gaps in some regions can mean slower service response
- WinMax control skills don't transfer to the Fanuc and Siemens world

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New base price is around $100,000, roughly $10K more than the belt-driven VMX30i. Configured with through-spindle coolant, probing, spindle chiller, and options, expect $115,000-$130,000. Used VMX30Di machines from 2016-2021 sell for $55,000-$85,000.
02
If aluminum is 60%+ of your work and surface finish matters, get the Di. If steel roughing is your bread and butter, get the standard VMX30i for its 157 ft-lbs of torque. If your work is a 50/50 mix, the Di is slightly more versatile because you can always slow down for steel, but you can't speed up a 12K spindle.
03
In testing, shops report 10-20% improvement in Ra surface finish values above 10K RPM compared to belt-driven spindles. The improvement comes from eliminating belt vibration harmonics. Below 8K RPM, the difference is minimal. The benefit is most noticeable on finish passes with small ballnose and endmill tools.
04
Highly recommended. Direct-drive spindles generate heat directly in the spindle housing without belt-based heat dissipation. A spindle chiller maintains thermal stability and prevents growth during extended high-RPM runs. Most Hurco dealers strongly recommend it as a factory option.
05
Yes, and better than the standard VMX30i for finish passes. The direct-drive's smoother rotation at high RPM produces cleaner 3D surfaces. Roughing complex 3D shapes in steel is where the lower torque becomes a limitation. For aluminum 3D work, the VMX30Di is excellent.
