Overview
The Hwacheon M2-5AX is a five-axis machining center with a Ø500 mm (Ø19.7 in) table and quick linear axes, rapiding at 50 m/min (1,969 ipm) on X, Y and Z. Travels are 750 mm (29.5 in) in X, 650 mm (25.6 in) in Y and 500 mm (19.7 in) in Z. Unlike the B-axis M1-5AX, the M2 tilts on an A axis, from +30° to -120°, with 360° of C rotation.
Two spindles are offered. The 20K turns 20,000 rpm with a 37 / 18.5 kW (49.6 / 24.8 hp) rating on Ø70 mm (Ø2.8 in) bearings, in BBT-40 with CAT-40 as an option. The 30K turns 30,000 rpm with 18.5 / 13 kW (24.8 / 17.4 hp) on Ø45 mm (Ø1.8 in) bearings and uses HSK-E40. Both are built-in motor spindles with oil-jet lubrication and jacket cooling.
The spindle choice also sets the tool envelope, and the difference is large. On the 20K a tool may be Ø80 mm (Ø3.1 in) with adjacent tools in place or Ø170 mm (Ø6.7 in) without, 300 mm (11.8 in) long and 8 kg (17.6 lb). On the 30K the limits fall to Ø60 mm (Ø2.4 in) and Ø90 mm (Ø3.5 in), 250 mm (9.8 in) and 3 kg (6.6 lb). The magazine holds 30 tools, memory random, and the pack lists no larger option.
The rotary axes are where the M2 is slow. A indexes at 8.3 rpm and C at 33.3 rpm, so programs with frequent large tilts spend time on A even though the linear axes are quick. The table is rated 300 kg (661 lb) with five 14 mm T-slots at 80 mm pitch, and spindle nose to table runs from 75 to 575 mm (3.0 to 22.6 in). The M3-5AX steps up to a Ø700 x 540 mm (Ø27.6 x 21.3 in) table rated 800 kgf (1,764 lb) and a 40-tool magazine.
The control is a Fanuc 31i-B5. Site needs are 65 kVA, air at 0.5 to 0.7 MPa and 690 NL/min, and room for a 3,025 x 3,695 x 3,090 mm (119.1 x 145.5 x 121.7 in) machine of 11,000 kg (24,251 lb). The coolant tank holds 400 L (106 US gal).
