Overview

The Milltronics VM200-5X is a compact 5-axis vertical machining center with a 7.8 in (198 mm) diameter rotary table, 21 x 16 x 19 in (533 x 406 x 483 mm) of X, Y and Z travel and a 10,000 rpm BIG-PLUS ISO No. 40 spindle. The C axis turns through 360° and the A axis tilts from +30° to -110°. That A range passes the right angle on one side, which gives the tool access to undercut faces without a second clamping.

Size the work against the table before anything else. It is 7.8 in (198 mm) across, rated for 330 lb (150 kg), and slotted with 0.39 in (9.9 mm) T-slots at 60-degree radial locations. The distance from spindle nose to table runs from 0.8 to 19.8 in (20 to 503 mm), and that gap has to hold the fixture, the part and the tool together. In practice this is a machine for small parts on a centred fixture, not for plate work.

Spindle power is listed as 10/7.5 hp (7.5/5.6 kW) and the table gives no torque figure, which puts the VM200-5X at the light end of the Milltronics verticals. The VM3018 carries the same taper and the same 10,000 rpm with 20/15 hp (14.9/11.2 kW). Expect finishing and moderate roughing with cutters sized to the motor. The 24-tool double-arm changer takes CT40 holders with MAS 60 retention knobs, and each tool can be up to 3.5 in (89 mm) in diameter, 9.8 in (249 mm) long and 15 lb (7 kg).

Linear rapids are 945 ipm (24.0 m/min), cutting feed reaches 500 ipm (12.7 m/min) and the rotary axes are listed at 25 rpm. Milltronics states positioning accuracy of ±0.0004 in (±0.010 mm) and repeatability of 0.0002 in (0.005 mm). The machine weighs 7,738 lb (3,510 kg), stands 101 in (2,565 mm) high and needs a nominal operating footprint of 76 x 101 in (1,930 x 2,565 mm). The control is the Milltronics INSPIRE+ with a 19 in colour LCD touch screen. The power requirement is listed at 18 kVA; confirm the supply voltage and breaker size with Milltronics when ordering.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Full 5-axis motion, with a 360° C axis and an A axis tilting +30° / -110°, on a 76 x 101 in (1,930 x 2,565 mm) nominal footprint
  • 10,000 rpm BIG-PLUS ISO No. 40 spindle fed by a 24-tool double-arm changer
  • Positioning accuracy listed at ±0.0004 in (±0.010 mm) with repeatability of 0.0002 in (0.005 mm)
  • Accepts tools up to 3.5 in (89 mm) in diameter, wider than the 3 in (76 mm) limit of the larger VM250IL-5X
  • At 7,738 lb (3,510 kg) it is far lighter to site than the 13,068 lb (5,928 kg) VM250IL-5X

Limitations

  • The table is 7.8 in (198 mm) in diameter with a 330 lb (150 kg) limit that has to cover the fixture as well as the part
  • Spindle power is 10/7.5 hp (7.5/5.6 kW) and no torque figure is listed, so heavy roughing is outside its scope
  • Top speed is 10,000 rpm, where the VM250IL-5X is listed at 12,000 rpm (15k optional)
  • The rotary axes are listed at 25 rpm, a pace for positioning and contouring, not for turning-style operations

Best For

Small 5-axis parts within the 7.8 in (198 mm) table and 330 lb (150 kg) load Multi-face work in one clamping using the +30° / -110° A axis Shops short on floor space: 76 x 101 in (1,930 x 2,565 mm) footprint Light finishing cuts with 40-taper tooling at up to 10,000 rpm

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How large a part can the VM200-5X hold?

The rotary table is 7.8 in (198 mm) in diameter and rated for 330 lb (150 kg), fixture included. Vertical room is set by the spindle nose to table distance of 0.8 to 19.8 in (20 to 503 mm), which is shared between workholding, part and tool. Linear travels are 21 x 16 x 19 in (533 x 406 x 483 mm).

02 What are the rotary axis ranges on the VM200-5X?

The C axis rotates 360° and the A axis tilts from +30° to -110°. Both rotary axes are listed at 25 rpm. For locating fixtures the table has 0.39 in (9.9 mm) T-slots at 60-degree radial locations.

03 How does the VM200-5X compare with the VM250IL-5X?

The VM250IL-5X is the larger machine: a 9.8 in (249 mm) table rated for 440 lb (200 kg), a 12,000 rpm (15k optional) spindle at 15/10 hp (11.2/7.5 kW), a 40-tool changer and a weight of 13,068 lb (5,928 kg). The VM200-5X has a 7.8 in (198 mm) table, 330 lb (150 kg) capacity, 10,000 rpm, 10/7.5 hp (7.5/5.6 kW), 24 tools and weighs 7,738 lb (3,510 kg). Both use the BIG-PLUS ISO No. 40 taper and the INSPIRE+ control.

04 What tooling does the VM200-5X use?

CT40 tool shanks with MAS 60 retention knobs in a BIG-PLUS ISO No. 40 spindle. The double-arm changer holds 24 tools. Maximum tool size is 3.5 in (89 mm) in diameter, 9.8 in (249 mm) in length and 15 lb (7 kg) in weight.

05 What accuracy does Milltronics list for the VM200-5X?

Positioning accuracy is listed at ±0.0004 in (±0.010 mm) and repeatability at 0.0002 in (0.005 mm). The table does not say which standard or measuring method those figures follow, so ask for the inspection data if a part tolerance depends on them.
