Overview

The Zimmermann FZP42 is the heavy-cutting machine of the FZP line. Zimmermann says it is primarily designed for heavy-duty machining of titanium, high-strength steel and aluminum, and the figures back that up: a table rated at max. 15,000 kg/m², HSK-A100 spindles with up to 444 Nm at S1, and a VH60 head whose rotary axes clamp with 5,600 Nm on A and 6,000 Nm on C.

Travels match the FZP37 in X and Z, 3,000 to 40,000 mm (118 to 1,575 in) and 1,250 to 3,000 mm (49 to 118 in), and go further in Y, from 2,500 up to 7,000 mm (98 to 276 in). The table is listed up to 6,000 mm wide, less than the largest Y travel. What the FZP42 gives up against the FZP37 is acceleration: up to 3 m/s² instead of up to 5 m/s², at the same feed rate of up to 60 m/min.

Five spindles appear on the data sheet for the VH60 head. The 63 kW milling spindle runs to 15,000 rpm with 300 Nm at S1 and constant power from 2,000 rpm. The 93 kW spindle trades speed for torque: 8,000 rpm, 444 Nm at S1 and 553 Nm at S6. Under the heading of the MuST spindle changing system the sheet then lists a 44 kW roughing spindle at 10,000 rpm with 200 Nm, a second roughing spindle of 45 kW at 5,000 rpm with 344 Nm, and a 50 kW universal spindle at 24,000 rpm with 95 Nm on HSK-A63. The point of a changing system is that one machine can rough at low speed and finish at high speed in the same setup.

Standard accuracy is ≤8μm / ≤4μm linear (A/R to ISO 230-2) and ≤50μm / ≤30μm volumetric. Controls are Heidenhain TNC 7 or Siemens SINUMERIK ONE. Besides the VH60, the VH40 and M3ABC heads are listed as suitable.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Table load of max. 15,000 kg/m², the highest in the FZP line
  • 93 kW spindle option with 444 Nm at S1 and 553 Nm at S6 on HSK-A100
  • VH60 rotary axes hold 5,600 Nm (A) and 6,000 Nm (C) when clamped
  • MuST spindle changing system with roughing and universal spindles on the data sheet
  • Y travel up to 7,000 mm (276 in) and X up to 40,000 mm (1,575 in)
  • Standard linear accuracy of ≤8μm / ≤4μm (A/R, ISO 230-2)

Limitations

  • Linear acceleration is up to 3 m/s², lower than the up to 5 m/s² of the FZP37
  • The 93 kW spindle stops at 8,000 rpm, so small-tool finishing needs the 63 kW or the universal spindle
  • Minimum required space is 6,100 mm by 7,200 mm with 5,700 mm of height, before peripherals
  • Table width is listed up to 6,000 mm although Y travel goes to 7,000 mm

The FZP37 accelerates harder, up to 5 m/s² against up to 3 m/s², and its VH30 spindles run at 30,000 rpm.

03 What materials is the FZP42 built for?

Zimmermann describes it as primarily designed for heavy-duty machining and suitable for metals and tough materials such as titanium, high-strength steel and aluminum. It names model making, tool and mold construction, aerospace, automotive, shipbuilding and the alternative energy industry as fields of use.

04 What accuracy is specified for the FZP42?

Standard accuracy is ≤8μm / ≤4μm on the linear axes (A/R to ISO 230-2), ≤50μm / ≤30μm volumetric and ≤ 20μm thermostability to ISO 230-3. Increased accuracy is ≤5μm / ≤3μm linear, ≤30μm / ≤20μm volumetric and ≤ 10μm thermostability. The rotary axes of the VH60 head have a resolution of 0.0001°.

05 How fast are the axes of the FZP42?

The X, Y and Z axes are listed at up to 60 m/min with up to 3 m/s² of acceleration. The A and C axes of the VH60 head rotate at 360°/s and accelerate at 700°/s², with 3,000 Nm of torque in control.
