Overview

The AWEA MCP-8060 is the shortest machine of the widest MCP group: a moving column bridge type multi-face machining center with 8,000 mm (315.0 in) of X travel and 6,400 mm (252.0 in) of Y. Its fixed table measures 8,000 x 4,800 mm (315.0 x 189.0 in). No other model in the 6,400 mm group has a work area this close to square, and that shapes what it is good at.

Wide, compact parts are the natural load: large mould bases, machine frames, ring-shaped weldments, plates that are nearly as broad as they are long. AWEA lists the distance between columns as 5,700 mm, or 5,500 mm with the X-axis covers, so the passage under the bridge is wider than the table itself. When the part is narrower, two siblings cover the same X stroke with less bridge. The MCP-8050 has 5,400 mm (212.6 in) of Y over an 8,000 x 3,800 mm (315.0 x 149.6 in) table, and the MCP-8040 has 4,400 mm (173.2 in) over 8,000 x 2,800 mm (315.0 x 110.2 in).

Width changes little else. All three share the BBT50 spindle with its 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) motor, the 1,400 mm (55.1 in) Z stroke with a 1,600 mm option and the 40T magazine. What grows with the bridge is the coolant tank, 5,400 liter here against 4,000 liter on the MCP-8050.

Rapids are 10 / 10 / 10 m/min (394 / 394 / 394 ipm). On the MCP-8050 the Y figure is 7.5 m/min (295 ipm), so the wider machine is listed with the quicker cross travel. An automatic head changer and a two positions ATC system are standard equipment, which is what turns a large bridge mill into a machine that can reach the sides of a part as well as its top.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 6,400 mm (252.0 in) of Y travel, the widest of the three MCP groups, over a 4,800 mm wide table
  • 5,700 mm between columns (5,500 mm with the X-axis covers) for parts wider than the table
  • Y rapid of 10 m/min (394 ipm), where the MCP-8050 is listed at 7.5 m/min (295 ipm)
  • Automatic head changer and two positions ATC system are standard, per the maker
  • 5,400 liter coolant tank, larger than the 4,000 liter of the MCP-8050 and the 3,400 liter of the MCP-8040

Limitations

  • X travel stops at 8,000 mm (315.0 in); longer parts need the MCP-10060 or a larger sibling
  • AWEA's table for this model gives no table load, machine weight or positioning accuracy
  • The standard spindle is the 4,000 gear type; the built-in spindles are options
  • A bridge this wide is wasted on narrow work that the MCP-8040 covers with 4,400 mm (173.2 in) of Y

Best For

Wide mould bases and die sets near 8,000 x 4,800 mm Machine frames and weldments machined on five sides Broad plates that need 6,400 mm (252.0 in) of cross travel Shops whose crane loads over low side structures

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How wide a part fits on the MCP-8060?

The table is 4,800 mm (189.0 in) wide and the Y axis travels 6,400 mm (252.0 in). AWEA lists 5,700 mm between the columns, or 5,500 mm with the X-axis covers. The Y stroke is longer than the table is wide, which leaves the head room to move out past the part edge, as side machining with an attachment head requires.

02 What separates the MCP-8060 from the MCP-8050 and MCP-8040?

The bridge. All three have 8,000 mm (315.0 in) of X travel. The MCP-8060 has 6,400 mm (252.0 in) of Y over a 4,800 mm wide table. The MCP-8050 has 5,400 mm (212.6 in) of Y and a 3,800 mm wide table, and the MCP-8040 has 4,400 mm (173.2 in) and a 2,800 mm wide table. Spindle, Z travel and magazine are the same across the three.

03 Does the MCP-8060 machine five faces as delivered?

AWEA states that an automatic head changer and a two positions ATC system are standardly equipped for multi-face machining, and that a new generation of in-house made attachment heads is available. Which heads are included with a given machine is not in the specification table, so that has to be settled in the order.

04 Is the table load of the MCP-8060 published?

No. The specification table gives the table as 8,000 x 4,800 mm (315.0 x 189.0 in) and states no load figure. On a moving column machine the table does not travel, so the part's weight is carried by a stationary bed rather than by the X-axis drive, but the permitted load still has to be confirmed with the maker.
