Overview

The AXA VPC 40 U turns the compact VPC gantry into a 5-side machine. A 1-axis tilting spindle head swivels around the Y-axis (B-axis) through 90°, and an NC rotary table integrated in the machine bed turns the workpiece around the Z-axis. Together they let the SK 40 spindle reach the top and all four sides of a part in one clamping.

The table is a combination. Fixed tables provide a clamping area 1,100 mm wide and about as long as the X travel, and the rotary table is set higher than the fixed tables so that the horizontal spindle can work around it. Its clamping surface is 1,100 x 1,100 mm, with sizes up to ø 1,600 mm as optional features. The rotary table carries 1,500 kg, or 2,000 kg optionally, and is rated for a tangential moment of 10,000 Nm and a tilting moment of 26,000 Nm. Clamping is hydraulic.

Travel depends on the spindle position. X is 2,300 mm (90.6 in) with the spindle vertical and 2,000 mm with it horizontal, because the swung head uses part of the stroke. Y is 1,200 mm and Z is 600 mm, with 700 mm available.

As delivered the head indexes in 2.5° steps. Finer positioning of 0.001 is an optional feature, and buyers planning angled features should order it. Drive no. 110 supplies 143 Nm and 30 kW at 40% DC. The magazine holds 22 tools, up to 90 as an option, and changes take approx. 6 s.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How does the VPC 40 U reach five sides of a part?

The spindle head tilts around the Y-axis from vertical to horizontal, a swivelling range of 90°. The NC rotary table, integrated in the machine bed, turns continuously around the Z-axis and presents each side to the horizontal spindle. The top is machined with the spindle vertical.

02 What size and load can the rotary table take?

The clamping surface is 1,100 x 1,100 mm, and AXA footnotes sizes up to ø 1,600 mm as optional features. Maximum transport weight is 1,500 kg, optionally 2,000 kg. The measuring system accuracy is ± 5 arcsec, with ± 1 arcsec optional.

03 Why are there two X travel figures?

AXA lists the X-traverse range separately for the vertical and the horizontal spindle. With the spindle vertical it is 2,300 mm, optionally 2,940 mm or 3,400 mm. With the spindle horizontal it is 2,000 mm, optionally 2,640 mm or 3,100 mm.

04 How is the VPC 40 U different from the VPC 45 U?

The VPC 45 U is the larger build: 1,400 mm of Y and 900 mm of Z as standard, a rotary table for 2,000 kg with sizes up to ø 2,300 mm, and a head with an optional 0.001° fully interpolating B-axis. The VPC 40 U has 1,200 mm, 600 mm and a 1,500 kg rotary table.
