Overview

The AWEA MVP-4032 is the shortest machine in the MVP series of moving cross rail, five-face bridge machining centers: 4,000 mm (157.5 in) of X travel, 3,200 mm (126.0 in) of Y and 1,000 mm (39.4 in) of Z, with 1,200 or 1,400 mm of Z as options. The cross rail itself travels 1,250 mm (49.2 in) on the W axis, so the head can be brought down to a low plate or raised over a tall weldment without changing the Z stroke.

Being the short bed has consequences worth knowing. X rapid traverse is 15 m/min (591 ipm), where the MVP-5032 is listed at 10 m/min (394 ipm). VDI positioning accuracy is P = 0.025 mm over full travel, the tightest figure in the series, and the machine weighs 70,000 kg (154,321 lb) against 75,000 kg (165,344 lb) for the MVP-5032. The trade is the table: 4,020 x 2,400 mm (158.3 x 94.5 in) with a 15,000 kg (33,069 lb) limit, the lowest load rating among the 3,200 mm machines.

The spindle is a BT 50 unit with a 22 / 26 kW (30 / 35 HP) motor. Vertical speed is 10 ~ 4,000 rpm and the horizontal head runs 20 ~ 3,000 rpm. AWEA describes the standard drive as a high torque 2-step auto-exchange gear transmission, with a direct drive or built-in spindle and coolant through spindle as options. The horizontal head indexes on a curvic coupling in 5° increments (72 positions), which is what lets the sides and the top of a part be cut in one clamping.

Sixty tools sit in a servo magazine that serves either spindle orientation at any W position. Standard control is the FANUC Oi-MD.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • X rapid traverse of 15 m/min (591 ipm), against 10 m/min (394 ipm) on the MVP-5032 and MVP-6032
  • VDI positioning accuracy of P = 0.025 mm over full travel and repeatability of P = 0.018 mm, the tightest in the MVP range
  • Horizontal head on a curvic coupling with 5° increments (72 positions) for side faces in the same setup as the top
  • 1,250 mm (49.2 in) W-axis cross rail travel on box ways, locked hydraulically at any height
  • Lightest MVP at 70,000 kg (154,321 lb)

Limitations

  • Table load of 15,000 kg (33,069 lb); the MVP-5032 takes 18,000 kg (39,683 lb) and the MVP-6032 takes 20,000 kg (44,092 lb)
  • 2,700 mm (106.3 in) between the columns; work wider than that needs the MVP-4040 with 3,500 mm (137.8 in)
  • Direct drive spindle, built-in spindle and coolant through spindle are options, not part of the standard gear head
  • Cutting feed rate is 5 m/min (197 ipm), well below the rapid rates

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does the MVP-4032 give up against the MVP-5032?

Length and table load. The MVP-4032 has 4,000 mm (157.5 in) of X travel and a 15,000 kg (33,069 lb) table; the MVP-5032 has 5,000 mm (196.9 in) and 18,000 kg (39,683 lb). In return the shorter machine rapids X at 15 m/min (591 ipm) instead of 10 m/min (394 ipm) and its VDI positioning accuracy is P = 0.025 mm where the MVP-5032 is listed at P = 0.030 mm.

02 How does five-face machining work on this machine?

The spindle head works vertically for the top face and through a horizontal spindle head for the sides. That head is positioned by a curvic coupling in 5° increments (72 positions). AWEA lists a Five Sided Coordinate Conversion System as standard, and the servo tool magazine changes tools for vertical or horizontal use at any position of the W axis.

03 How fast are the two spindle orientations?

The table gives 10 ~ 4,000 rpm for vertical work and 20 ~ 3,000 rpm for horizontal work, from a 22 / 26 kW (30 / 35 HP) motor on a BT 50 taper. The standard drive is a 2-step auto-exchange gear transmission. A direct drive spindle or a built-in spindle can be ordered instead.

04 What is the difference between the MVP-4032 and the MVP-4040?

Width. The MVP-4040 has 4,000 mm (157.5 in) of Y travel, a 4,020 x 3,010 mm (158.3 x 118.5 in) table and 3,500 mm (137.8 in) between the columns. The MVP-4032 has 3,200 mm (126.0 in) of Y, a 2,400 mm (94.5 in) wide table and a 2,700 mm (106.3 in) column gap. Its Y rapid is 12 m/min (472 ipm) where the wider machine is listed at 10 m/min (394 ipm).
