Overview

The Willemin-Macodel 408S2 is a 5 to 6-axis machining center for complex prismatic parts that also need turned features. It moves 250 mm in X, 200 mm in Y and 310 mm in Z at up to 40 m/min, and holds the part on a C-axis divider with a Ø180 mm plate.

Its rotary layout differs from the bar machines of the same frame. On the 408S2 the B axis swings from -100° to +30° at up to 120 min-1, whereas the 408B swings from -15° to +100° towards a horizontal bar spindle. The divider underneath is driven by a torque motor with 20 nm of S1 torque and 38 nm rated, and it takes 12 kg.

Willemin-Macodel states parts up to a diameter of 150 mm, a little inside the plate. Turning mode is the bracketed entry (4,000 min-1/3,000 min-1), and in milling mode the divider turns at 200 min-1. Because both rotary axes resolve finely, 0.0001° on the B axis, the machine can interpolate turned-looking features as well as spin the part against a fixed tool.

Spindle and magazine follow the frame's standard: HSK-E40 at 30,000 min-1, or 42,000 min-1 in brackets, and 48 tools with 72 or 96 in brackets, changed in 0.8 sec. The control is a FANUC 31i-B5 PLUS iHMI Pro, with HEIDENHAIN TNC 7 as the bracketed choice. Billet fixtures and different pallet standards can be fitted, according to the maker.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • C-axis divider with a Ø180 mm plate on a torque motor: 20 nm S1 and 38 nm rated torque
  • B axis from -100° to +30° with 0.0001° resolution
  • Bracketed turning mode of the divider at 4,000 min-1 or 3,000 min-1
  • 48 tools as standard, 72 or 96 in brackets, with a 0.8 sec tool-to-tool change
  • Linear axes at 40 m/min with 0.0125 µm resolution

Limitations

  • Load capacity of the divider is 12 kg
  • The B axis is limited to 120 min-1, against 250 min-1 on the 408B
  • Turning speeds are listed only in brackets
  • Not a bar machine: no bar passage is listed, unlike the 408B and 408MT

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What part size does the 408S2 handle?

Willemin-Macodel gives a diameter of up to 150 mm. The plate of the C-axis divider is Ø180 mm and its load capacity is 12 kg. Linear travels are 250 mm in X, 200 mm in Y and 310 mm in Z.

02 Does the 408S2 turn as well as mill?

The maker describes it as a milling and turning machine and lists C-axis dividers for turning capacities up to 4,000 min-1. In the table the turning mode is printed in brackets as (4,000 min-1/3,000 min-1), next to 200 min-1 in milling mode, so confirm which speed a quoted machine has.

03 How does the 408S2 differ from the 508S2?

The 508S2 has 400 mm of X and 385 mm of Z against 250 mm and 310 mm, the same 200 mm of Y, and a magazine that goes up to 120 tools. Both list 40 m/min, the same B axis range and the same Ø180 mm, 12 kg divider. The 408S2 needs 3 m² of floor and the 508S2 4 m².

04 Which controls are available on the 408S2?

The listed control is a FANUC 31i-B5 PLUS iHMI Pro. A HEIDENHAIN TNC 7 is printed in brackets as the alternative, which is the same pair of choices the 3-axis 501S2 lists.
