Overview

The AWEA MCP-8040 is the shortest machine in the MCP moving column range: a bridge type five-face machining center with 8,000 mm (315.0 in) of X travel, 4,400 mm (173.2 in) of Y and 1,400 mm (55.1 in) of Z above a stationary 8,000 x 2,800 mm (315.0 x 110.2 in) table. The part never moves. Both columns carry the cross beam along it.

AWEA sells three machines with an 8,000 mm X stroke in about this width, and the choice starts there. The MVP-8040 is also a five-face machine, with 4,000 mm (157.5 in) of Y, a W axis of 1,250 mm (49.2 in) and a stated table load of 25,000 kg (55,115 lb). The LG-8040 is a gantry with 4,000 mm of Y, 1,000 mm (39.4 in) of Z and an X rapid of 20 m/min (787 ipm). Against both, the MCP-8040 has the longest Y stroke and the tallest standard Z, and it traverses at 10 m/min (394 ipm) on every axis.

Its spindle takes BBT50 tooling and is driven by a 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) motor. An automatic head changer and a two positions ATC system are standard equipment, so side faces can be reached without turning the part over. The 40T magazine rides on the column.

One thing to settle early: the specification sheet for this model gives no table load, no positioning accuracy and no machine weight. Ask AWEA for all three before a foundation is drawn.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 4,400 mm (173.2 in) of Y travel, more than the 4,000 mm (157.5 in) of the MVP-8040 and the LG-8040
  • Automatic head changer and two positions ATC system are standard, not options
  • 1,400 mm (55.1 in) of Z as standard, with 1,600 mm listed as an option
  • Stationary 8,000 x 2,800 mm (315.0 x 110.2 in) table, so the part's weight is never accelerated
  • Tool magazine attached to the column, so X does not have to move for a tool change

Limitations

  • No table load is published; the MVP-8040 states 25,000 kg (55,115 lb)
  • X rapid of 10 m/min (394 ipm) is half the 20 m/min (787 ipm) of the LG-8040
  • The table is 2,800 mm (110.2 in) wide under 4,400 mm of Y travel, so the outer Y stroke serves side faces more than table area
  • No accuracy or repeatability row in the maker's table for this model
06

Best For

Five-face work on parts up to about 8,000 x 2,800 mm in one clamping Heavy fabrications that are better left stationary on the table Shops that need 4,400 mm (173.2 in) of Y on an 8,000 mm X stroke BBT50 milling and boring with changeable attachment heads

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How does the MCP-8040 differ from the MVP-8040?

Both are five-face AWEA machines with 8,000 mm (315.0 in) of X travel. The MCP-8040 has 4,400 mm (173.2 in) of Y and 1,400 mm (55.1 in) of Z over an 8,000 x 2,800 mm table. The MVP-8040 has 4,000 mm (157.5 in) of Y, 1,000 mm (39.4 in) of Z plus a 1,250 mm (49.2 in) W axis, an 8,040 x 3,010 mm (316.5 x 118.5 in) table and a published load of 25,000 kg (55,115 lb).

02 Is the MCP-8040 faster than the LG-8040 gantry?

No. The MCP-8040 lists 10 / 10 / 10 m/min (394 / 394 / 394 ipm) for X, Y and Z. The LG-8040 lists 20 m/min (787 ipm) in X and 15 m/min (591 ipm) in Y. The MCP's case is five-face capability and a Z stroke of 1,400 mm against the 1,000 mm (39.4 in) of the LG-8040, not traverse speed.

03 Which spindle speeds does AWEA list for the MCP-8040?

The vertical spindle row is printed without a unit. It reads 4,000 for the standard gear spindle, 5,000 / 6,000 for the optional gear spindles and 8,000 / 12,000 for the optional built-in spindles. Taper is BBT50 and the motor is 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) in every case shown.

04 What does the MCP-8040 need from the building?

The table lists a power requirement of 220 ± 10 % Vac / 80 kVA and pneumatic pressure of 5 ~ 8 (5) kg/cm². The coolant tank holds 3,400 liter, the hydraulic tank 100 liter and the lubrication tank 6 liter. Machine weight and footprint are not in the specification table, so they have to come from AWEA with the foundation drawing.
