Overview

Hartford's 5A-95Q-5X, written 5A-95Q / 5X on the maker's site, is the simultaneous 5-axis version of its largest trunnion machine. An 850 kg (1,874 lb) part on a Ø 800 mm (31.5 in) table can be tilted ±120° on the A axis and turned 360° on C while the spindle contours it.

Simultaneous work at this size puts demands on the rotary drives that indexing does not. Hartford fits DD motors to the 4th and 5th axes, with a high-resolution measurement system reading the rotation directly. There is no worm gear to wear or to introduce backlash during reversals, which is what shows up as marks on a blended surface.

Accuracy over long programs is addressed in several statements on the page. Five-axis error compensation is said to reach within 20 μm. Overall thermal countermeasures bring accuracy within 3 μm after compensation, and the spindle's thermal displacement is cut by 70%. As an option the motor bases and bearings of the three linear axes can be cooled.

Linear travels are 950 mm (37.4 in), 850 mm (33.5 in) and 650 mm (25.6 in). The #40 spindle is either a DDS type at 10,000 / 12,000 / 15,000 rpm or a built-in type at 20,000 rpm, with 7.5 / 9.8 kW or optionally 10 / 12.5 kW. The magazine holds 40 tools, with 60, 80 or 120 as larger versions.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Simultaneous 5-axis machining on a Ø 800 mm (31.5 in), 850 kg (1,874 lb) table
  • DD motor driven A and C axes with direct rotation measurement
  • Five-axis error compensation within 20 μm, per Hartford
  • Accuracy within 3 μm after thermal compensation, per Hartford
  • Tool magazine of 40, expandable to 60, 80 or 120

Limitations

  • Spindle motor of 7.5 / 9.8 kW, optionally 10 / 12.5 kW, is light for parts this large
  • The built-in spindle is listed at 20,000 rpm, below the 24,000 rpm of the 5A-65E
  • No #50 or HSK-A100 spindle in the 5A series; larger 5-axis work moves to the 5BC machines
  • Rotary axis speeds and torques are not published
06

Best For

Large impellers, blisks and structural aerospace parts in aluminium Tyre moulds and other sculpted mould surfaces Continuous 5-axis finishing where surface blending matters Long-running jobs that depend on thermal stability

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Is the Hartford 5A-95Q-5X a true simultaneous 5-axis machine?

Hartford lists it as a 5 Axis Vertical Machining Center, while the plain 5A-95Q carries a 4+1 axis note. The rotary axes are DD motor driven with a direct rotation measurement system, and the A axis travels ±120° with C at 360°.

02 What are the linear travels of the 5A-95Q-5X?

X 950 mm (37.4 in), Y 850 mm (33.5 in) and Z 650 mm (25.6 in). The table is Ø 800 mm (31.5 in) and carries 850 kg (1,874 lb).

03 How does the 5A-95Q-5X manage thermal growth?

Hartford cites overall machine thermal countermeasures with accuracy within 3 μm after compensation and a 70% reduction in spindle thermal displacement. A 3-axis thermal deformation treatment is optional: cooling devices on the motor base and bearing, which the maker says improves machining accuracy by 15%.

04 How many tools can the 5A-95Q-5X hold?

The ATC row reads A: 40 (60 / 80 / 120) pcs, an arm-type magazine with 40 tools and larger versions of 60, 80 and 120. Shanks are BT40, with BBT, CAT, DIN and HSK-A63 as alternatives.
