Overview

The Hartford Aero-646B is the largest of the B models in the Aero series of gantry type 5-faced machining centers. The table is 6,000 x 4,100 mm (236.2 x 161.4 in), X travel 6,000 mm (236.2 in), Y travel 4,600 mm (181.1 in).

At 5,000 kg/m² over a table of this size the machine is plainly meant for the heaviest class of part: large stamping dies, steam and gas turbine casings, diesel engine frames, press crowns. With the workpiece standing still and the gantry moving over it, weight has no effect on the axis drives.

A part like that is expensive to scrap, which gives weight to the features Hartford lists for holding accuracy. The Z axis has four linear guideways. The screws are supported against sagging under their own weight and are specified one level larger for static rigidity. And parameters are tuned automatically, a function the maker labels AI intelligent technology.

Above six metres the series continues with G models: the Aero-846G keeps this width with 8,000 mm (315.0 in) of X travel. The spindle on the 646B is a #50 gear head at 6,000 rpm (8,000 rpm optional), with the 10,000 rpm i-Tech hybrid as a further option, and Z travel is 1,000 mm or 1,200 mm.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 6,000 x 4,100 mm (236.2 x 161.4 in) table, the largest among the B models
  • 4,600 mm (181.1 in) of Y travel
  • Supported, upsized screws and four Z-axis guideways
  • Table rated at 5,000 kg/m² with the workpiece stationary

Limitations

  • Z travel of 1,000 mm or 1,200 mm limits tall casings
  • No spindle power stated for the standard gear head
  • 10,000 rpm is the fastest spindle offered, and optional

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How big is the Hartford Aero-646B?

The table measures 6,000 x 4,100 mm (236.2 x 161.4 in). X travel is 6,000 mm, Y travel 4,600 mm (181.1 in) and Z travel 1,000 mm, with a 1,200 mm option. The table rating is 5,000 kg/m².

02 What accuracy features does Hartford list for the Aero-646B?

A Z axis with four linear guideways, a screw support mechanism that improves dead weight sagging of the screw, a screw specification increased by one level for static rigidity, and automatic parameter tuning to maintain accuracy.

03 Is the Aero-646B the widest Aero?

It shares the widest cross section. The Aero-546B, Aero-846G and Aero-1046G also have 4,600 mm (181.1 in) of Y travel over a 4,100 mm wide table, at other lengths.

04 What is the next length above the Aero-646B?

The Aero-846G, with an 8,000 x 4,100 mm (315.0 x 161.4 in) table and 8,000 mm (315.0 in) of X travel. Y and Z travels and the spindle rows are unchanged.
