Overview

The Hermle C 62 U is the flagship large-capacity 5-axis machining center in Hermle's High-Performance Line, designed for the largest aerospace structural parts, mold and die work, and energy sector components. With X/Y/Z travels of 1,200 x 1,300 x 900 mm (47.2 x 51.2 x 35.4 in) and a trunnion table rated for 2,500 kg (5,512 lb), the C 62 U operates at a scale that few 5-axis trunnion-table machines can match.

The Z-axis travel of 900 mm is a significant dimension — it provides the depth needed for deep-cavity mold work and tall aerospace structural components. The swiveling rotary table measures 1,350 x 1,100 mm with a collision circle of 1,400 mm (55.1 in) and vertical table clearance of 1,100 mm. Maximum workpiece diameter is 1,200 mm.

Spindle options include 9,000, 14,000, and 18,000 rpm on HSK-A63 with 29 kW (39 hp) continuous power. The torque-oriented spindle options reflect the heavy-duty roughing requirements at this machine scale. Rapid traverse is 50 m/min (1,969 ipm) on all linear axes.

Hermle's gantry-style column architecture maintains rigidity and thermal stability across the full working volume. The mineral-cast base weighs approximately 26,000 kg total. Positioning accuracy is +/- 0.005 mm with repeatability of +/- 0.003 mm. Control options include Heidenhain TNC 640 or Siemens 840D sl. The 60-tool standard magazine expands to 325 positions.

The C 62 U competes with the DMG Mori DMU 125/160 and Starrag Ecospeed series. New pricing runs $1,050,000-$1,550,000. This is the machine for shops that need the absolute largest Hermle platform with full 5-axis capability.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Largest Hermle 5-axis at 1,200 x 1,300 x 900 mm — handles true aerospace structural scale
  • 900 mm Z-travel provides exceptional depth for deep-cavity mold and tall aerospace parts
  • 2,500 kg table load accommodates heavy titanium and steel forgings
  • 325-tool magazine option supports the most complex multi-operation programs
  • Gantry column architecture maintains rigidity and accuracy across the full envelope
  • 26,000 kg mineral-cast base delivers outstanding vibration damping at scale

Limitations

  • Investment exceeds $1 million — justified only for large-part aerospace or energy applications
  • 26,000 kg machine weight requires significant foundation engineering
  • Hermle service network is smaller than DMG Mori or Mazak at this machine scale
  • 50 m/min rapids are moderate for a machine of this size

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How does the C 62 U differ from the C 52 U?

The C 62 U offers 200 mm more X, 200 mm more Y, 150 mm more Z, 500 kg more table capacity, and a much larger collision circle (1,400 vs 1,290 mm). The C 62 U targets true large-format aerospace and energy work.

02 What does a Hermle C 62 U cost?

New machines run $1,050,000-$1,550,000 depending on spindle, tool magazine, and automation options.

03 Is there a mill-turn version?

Yes, the C 62 U MT adds 800 rpm turning capability via direct-drive torque motor on the C-axis table, priced approximately $200,000-$300,000 higher.

04 What foundation is required?

At 26,000 kg, a properly engineered reinforced concrete foundation meeting Hermle's load and vibration isolation specifications is required. Foundation engineering consultation is recommended.
