Overview

The AWEA MCP-14040 sits in the middle of the seven 4,400 mm (173.2 in) Y machines of the MCP range, with 14,000 mm (551.2 in) of X travel and a 14,000 x 2,800 mm (551.2 x 110.2 in) table. Three shorter and three longer models share every other row of its specification table.

At this length, where the tool magazine lives starts to matter. AWEA attaches it to the column. A tool change therefore happens wherever the bridge happens to be, and the X-axis does not have to run back to a parking position first. With an X rapid of 10 m/min (394 ipm), a return trip along a 14,000 mm stroke would be a long interruption, so this detail is worth more here than on a short machine.

There is one other AWEA machine with the same X stroke. The LG-14050 is a gantry with 5,000 mm (196.9 in) of Y, a 14,000 x 4,800 mm (551.2 x 189.0 in) table and 20 m/min (787 ipm) in X, and its table states a positioning accuracy of P = 0.060 mm. Z on the LG-14050 is 1,000 mm (39.4 in). The MCP-14040 answers with 1,400 mm (55.1 in) of Z, a standard head changer for five-face work and a 40T magazine, but AWEA publishes no accuracy figure for it.

Between the columns the table lists 3,700 mm, or 3,500 mm with the X-axis covers. That clearance, not the Y stroke, sets the widest part that can pass under the bridge.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Magazine on the column: tool changes happen at any point of the 14,000 mm (551.2 in) X stroke
  • 1,400 mm (55.1 in) of Z against 1,000 mm (39.4 in) on the LG-14050
  • Automatic head changer standard for machining side faces
  • 40T magazine standard, 60T optional, each tool up to 20 kg (44 lb)
  • Dual linear scales on the X-axis

Limitations

  • No positioning accuracy in the table; the LG-14050 states P = 0.060 mm
  • Passage between the columns is 3,700 mm, or 3,500 mm with the X-axis covers, well short of the 4,400 mm (173.2 in) Y stroke
  • 10 m/min (394 ipm) rapids on a 14,000 mm axis make long repositioning moves slow
  • Narrower than the LG-14050, whose table is 14,000 x 4,800 mm (551.2 x 189.0 in)
06

Best For

Parts up to 14,000 mm long that need side-face machining Cycles with frequent tool changes far from the end of the bed Long machine frames, beams and rails no wider than 2,800 mm (110.2 in) Shops that want Z height before traverse speed

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Where is the tool changer on the MCP-14040?

On the column. AWEA states that this removes the need to move the X-axis for tool changes. The magazine is 40T (60T optional), and the two positions ATC system that comes as standard supports the multi-face function together with the automatic head changer.

02 MCP-14040 or LG-14050 for a 14,000 mm part?

The LG-14050 is wider and faster: 5,000 mm (196.9 in) of Y, a 14,000 x 4,800 mm (551.2 x 189.0 in) table and 20 m/min (787 ipm) in X, with P = 0.060 mm positioning accuracy stated. The MCP-14040 has 4,400 mm (173.2 in) of Y on a 2,800 mm wide table, 10 m/min (394 ipm) rapids and 1,400 mm (55.1 in) of Z where the LG-14050 has 1,000 mm (39.4 in). Choose by part height and by whether the side faces must be cut in the same setup.

03 How wide a workpiece passes between the columns?

The row for distance between columns reads 3,700 mm (3,500 mm), the second figure applying with the X-axis covers. The table itself is 2,800 mm (110.2 in) wide. Y travel of 4,400 mm (173.2 in) is longer than both, which gives the spindle and its heads room to work outside the part's edges.

04 What keeps the two columns in step?

AWEA fits dual linear scales to the X-axis and combines them with what it calls Simultaneous Control Technology, which it says prevents misalignment of the moving columns. The specification table carries no accuracy or repeatability row, so the resulting tolerance over 14,000 mm (551.2 in) has to be requested from the maker.
