Overview

The Mazak VTC-5 series is a vertical traveling column 5-axis machining center designed for long, flat workpieces that do not fit on trunnion-style 5-axis machines. Available in multiple configurations including the VTC-800/30SR (high-speed), VTC-800/30HD (heavy-duty), and VTC-800/30SD (rotary table variant), the machine uses a traveling column that moves over a large fixed table.

The VTC-800/30 models share a 137.8 x 32.3 in (3,500 x 820 mm) table. The X-axis stroke reaches 118.1 in (3,000 mm), Y-axis 31.5 in (800 mm), and B-axis swivels through 220 degrees total. This long X-stroke is the defining feature - it handles elongated aerospace skins, structural members, and rail sections that cannot physically fit on a 5-axis trunnion machine.

The SR version runs an 18,000 RPM CAT No.40 spindle at 35 kW (47 hp) for high-speed aluminum and composite machining. The HD version uses a 10,000 RPM CAT No.50 spindle for heavy-duty steel and titanium work. The SD variant adds an NC rotary table for full simultaneous 5-axis machining on cylindrical parts up to 820 mm (32.3 in) diameter.

B-axis positioning in 0.0001-degree increments enables precise angular approaches. Rapid traverse hits 50 m/min (1,969 ipm) on linear axes. The sashless door design with large viewing windows provides ergonomic operator access. The MAZATROL SmoothAi CNC manages all axis coordination with conversational and G-code programming.

The VTC concept targets parts that are too long for conventional VMCs but too small or thin for gantry machines. Aerospace wing skins, rail components, long structural brackets, and architectural metalwork are prime applications.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 3,000 mm X-axis stroke handles elongated parts impossible to machine on trunnion-style 5-axis
  • Two spindle options: 18K RPM CAT40 for high-speed aluminum or 10K RPM CAT50 for heavy steel/titanium
  • SD variant adds NC rotary table for simultaneous 5-axis on long cylindrical parts
  • 220-degree B-axis swivel provides extensive angular access to workpiece features
  • Large fixed table eliminates workpiece weight concerns that limit trunnion-table machines
  • Sashless door design with large windows provides excellent operator access and visibility
  • SmoothAi CNC with AI thermal compensation maintains accuracy over long travel distances

Limitations

  • Traveling column design inherently less rigid than fixed-column machines at full X-axis extension
  • Large footprint required for the long-travel X-axis; significant floor space commitment
  • No A-axis tilt on table means 5-axis envelope limited to B-axis head tilting plus optional rotary
  • CAT40 SR version lacks the tool rigidity for heavy roughing in steel and titanium
  • Table size limits Y-axis part width; narrow parts only without rotary table
05

Best For

Aerospace manufacturers machining long wing skins, structural members, and fuselage panels Rail and transportation manufacturers machining long structural components and extrusions Architectural metalwork shops producing long decorative and structural elements Energy manufacturers machining long turbine blade assemblies and generator components General manufacturers needing 5-axis angular access on parts exceeding 1 meter in length

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a VTC-5 cost?

New pricing ranges from about $400,000 for a base VTC-800/30SR to over $650,000 for an HD or SD variant with full options. Used VTC machines from prior generations trade at $150,000-$300,000.

02 SR vs HD vs SD?

SR: 18K RPM CAT40 for high-speed aluminum/composites. HD: 10K RPM CAT50 for heavy steel/titanium. SD: adds NC rotary table for simultaneous 5-axis on cylindrical parts. Choose based on primary material and part geometry.

03 How long a part can it handle?

The 3,000 mm X-stroke covers parts up to about 4,900 mm (193 in) on the fixed table. The SD rotary variant handles cylindrical parts up to 3,690 mm (145 in) long.

04 Is it truly 5-axis?

The SR and HD are 3+2 axis with the B-axis tilting head. The SD variant with NC rotary table provides full simultaneous 5-axis capability. All models can machine from compound angles via B-axis positioning.
