Overview
Speed is the whole case for the Haas UMC-500SS. It shares its 24 × 16 × 16 in (610 × 406 × 406 mm) envelope, 15.7 in (400 mm) platter and 30 hp (22.4 kW) spindle rating with the UMC-500, then raises spindle speed to 12,000 rpm, rapids to 1,200 ipm (30.5 m/min) and the rotary axes to 179°/sec. Haas's starting price is US$185,995.
The rotary figure is the one that changes how the machine behaves in a simultaneous 5-axis cut. In that kind of toolpath a small move at the tool tip can demand a large rotation of B or C, and the feedrate falls to whatever the rotary axis can deliver. At 179°/sec on both axes, each with 1,854 ft-lbf (2,514 N·m) of torque and a 900 ft-lbf (1,220 N·m) brake, the trunnion keeps up with the linear axes far better than a slow rotary would.
The spindle keeps its 90 ft-lbf (122 N·m) at 2,000 rpm, so roughing capability is what the UMC-500 offers, and the extra speed serves small tools and finishing passes. Linear cutting feed rises to 833 ipm (21.2 m/min), and the 30+1 side-mount changer swaps tools in 1.8 s, or 2.4 s chip-to-chip.
Capacity does not grow with the speed: 500 lb (226.8 kg) on the platter, 200 lb (90.7 kg) with a pallet pool, and 18 in (457 mm) of part swing. B tilts from +120° to -35° and C rotates 360°. The taper can be CT40, BT40 or HSK-A63, and Haas's shipping table shows alternative 50+1, 70+1 and 120+1 tool changer configurations.
