Overview

The KAAST V-Mill 600.5X is a 5-axis machining center built around a Ø600 mm (23 in) tilting rotary table, with 820 mm (32 in) of X travel, 750 mm (29.5 in) of Y and 500 mm (19 in) of Z. The spindle is a BT 40 unit running to 15,000 rpm, and KAAST lists the control as the Heidenhain iTNC 530.

The travels are generous for the table. X and Y both exceed the table diameter, which gives the spindle room to reach around a part when the table is tilted and not only when it lies flat. The table tilts from -120° to +30° and the rotary axis positions in steps of 0.001°. Spindle nose to table distance runs from 15 to 515 mm (0.6-20 in), so the whole Z stroke is usable above the table face, though a tall fixture with a long tool uses it up quickly.

Table load is the figure to check first. KAAST rates the table for 500 kg (1,100 lb) at 0° and 400 kg (881 lb) at 90°, so the allowance drops once the part hangs off a tilted table. That is still well above the V-Mill 620.5X, which is listed at 300 kg (660 lb) at 0° and 200 kg (440 lb) at 90° on a Ø650 mm (25 in) table. The V-Mill 600.5X is also much the heavier machine, 13,400 kg (29,480 lb) against 8,200 kg (18,070 lb) for the V-Mill 620.5X.

Spindle power is listed as 11/17 kW (14.8/22.8 hp); the table gives the two ratings without saying which duty each applies to, and there is no torque row. With 15,000 rpm on a 40-taper spindle, the machine is set up for finishing and small-tool work more than for heavy roughing. The magazine holds 30 tools, each up to Ø75 mm (2.9 in) in diameter, 300 mm (11.7 in) long and 7 kg (15 lb). Rapids are 45 m/min (1,770 in/min) and the cutting feed rate is 20 m/min (780 in/min).

Plan the installation around a footprint of 4,410 x 3,880 mm (173.6 x 152.8 in), a height of 3,270 mm (128.7 in), a power requirement of 55 kW (73 hp) and an air supply of 7 kg/cm2. The coolant tank holds 280 L (74 gal).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 15,000 rpm BT 40 spindle, against 12,000 rpm on the V-Mill 620.5X
  • Table load of 500 kg (1,100 lb) at 0° and 400 kg (881 lb) at 90°, well above the 300 kg (660 lb) and 200 kg (440 lb) of the V-Mill 620.5X
  • 820 mm (32 in) of X and 750 mm (29.5 in) of Y travel around a Ø600 mm (23 in) table leave room to reach a tilted part
  • Table tilt from -120° to +30° with a minimum rotary increment of 0.001°
  • 45 m/min (1,770 in/min) rapids and a 20 m/min (780 in/min) cutting feed rate

Limitations

  • Tools are limited to 7 kg (15 lb) and Ø75 mm (2.9 in), which rules out large face mills and heavy boring bars
  • Table load falls from 500 kg (1,100 lb) at 0° to 400 kg (881 lb) at 90°, so heavy parts need checking in the tilted position
  • Spindle power is given as 11/17 kW (14.8/22.8 hp) with no torque figure, so low-speed cutting capacity cannot be judged from the table
  • The 30-tool magazine is smaller than the 32 tools of the V-Mill 620.5X and the 40 tools of the V-Mill 1000.5X
  • Needs 4,410 x 3,880 mm (173.6 x 152.8 in) of floor, 3,270 mm (128.7 in) of height and a floor that takes 13,400 kg (29,480 lb)

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What size part fits the V-Mill 600.5X?

The table is Ø600 mm (23 in) with a Ø50 mm (1.9 in) H7 center bore, and travels are 820 mm (32 in) in X, 750 mm (29.5 in) in Y and 500 mm (19 in) in Z. Spindle nose to table distance is 15-515 mm (0.6-20 in). The table carries 500 kg (1,100 lb) at 0° and 400 kg (881 lb) at 90°, so weigh the part together with its fixture.

02 How does the V-Mill 600.5X differ from the V-Mill 620.5X?

The V-Mill 600.5X has the faster spindle and the higher table load: 15,000 rpm on a BT 40 taper and 500 kg (1,100 lb) at 0°. The V-Mill 620.5X is listed with 12,000 rpm, an SK 40 taper, 300 kg (660 lb) at 0° on a Ø650 mm (25 in) table, and 32 tools. The controls differ as well: Heidenhain iTNC 530 on the V-Mill 600.5X and Heidenhain TNC 640 on the V-Mill 620.5X.

03 What tools can the magazine hold?

The magazine holds 30 tools. Each can be up to Ø75 mm (2.9 in) in diameter, 300 mm (11.7 in) long and 7 kg (15 lb) in weight. The spindle taper is BT 40 and the top speed is 15,000 rpm.

04 How far does the table tilt?

From -120° to +30°, with a minimum rotary increment of 0.001°. The load rating depends on the tilt: 500 kg (1,100 lb) with the table at 0° and 400 kg (881 lb) at 90°.

05 What does the V-Mill 600.5X need for installation?

KAAST lists a power requirement of 55 kW (73 hp) and an air pressure of 7 kg/cm2. The machine measures 4,410 x 3,880 x 3,270 mm (173.6 x 152.8 x 128.7 in) and weighs 13,400 kg (29,480 lb). The table surface sits 1,160 mm (45 in) above the floor, and the coolant tank holds 280 L (74 gal).
