Overview

Multi-face work is the reason to look at the AWEA MCP-12060. It is a bridge machine whose columns run 12,000 mm (472.4 in) along a stationary 12,000 x 4,800 mm (472.4 x 189.0 in) table, with a head that crosses 6,400 mm (252.0 in), and AWEA fits an automatic head changer and a two positions ATC system as standard.

Those two items belong together. Swapping the vertical spindle nose for an angle head lets the machine cut the four sides of a part in the setup that did the top. A tool then has to be loaded into a spindle that may point down or sideways, hence two change positions. The maker adds that a new generation of in-house made attachment heads is available; the table does not list them, so the head package is something to pin down when ordering.

Tool handling is helped by where the magazine sits. It is attached to the column and rides with it. On a 12,000 mm axis that matters: the columns do not travel back to a parked magazine for each change, wherever along the table the cut is. Capacity is 40T, with 60T optional. Each tool may be up to 400 mm (15.7 in) long and 20 kg (44 lb), and Ø125 mm (Ø4.9 in) across with neighbours in place or Ø200 mm (Ø7.9 in) beside empty pockets.

Side machining also explains the geometry. Y travel exceeds the table width, so a horizontal head can drop outside the part. Z is 1,400 mm (55.1 in), or 1,600 mm as an option, and sets how far down a side wall the head reaches. The spindle is BBT50 with a 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) motor.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Automatic head changer standard, so top and side faces are cut in one clamping
  • Two positions ATC system standard for changing tools with different heads
  • Magazine travels with the column: no X-axis move for a tool change on a 12,000 mm (472.4 in) stroke
  • 40T magazine, 60T optional, for tools up to 400 mm (15.7 in) and 20 kg (44 lb)
  • 6,400 mm (252.0 in) of Y against a 4,800 mm wide table leaves room for a side head

Limitations

  • Attachment heads are described as available but are not itemised in the specification table
  • Tool diameter is Ø125 mm (Ø4.9 in) with a full magazine; Ø200 mm (Ø7.9 in) needs empty adjacent pockets
  • Z travel of 1,400 mm (55.1 in) limits side-face depth unless the 1,600 mm option is taken
  • No horizontal spindle speed or head power is given for the attachment heads
06

Best For

Five-sided machining of large housings and frames Long weldments finished on top and sides in one setup Jobs with many tool changes along a 12,000 mm table Aerospace and marine structures up to 4,800 mm wide

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How does the MCP-12060 reach the sides of a workpiece?

Through attachment heads. AWEA equips the series with an automatic head changer as standard, so the machine can exchange its vertical spindle nose for another head under program control. The Y axis has 6,400 mm (252.0 in) of travel over a 4,800 mm (189.0 in) wide table, which gives the head space to move beyond the part and work on its side faces.

02 Why does the tool changer have two positions?

Because the spindle axis changes when the head does. AWEA states that a two positions ATC system is standardly equipped for improved multi-face machining. The specification table does not describe the mechanism further. The magazine itself holds 40T, or 60T as an option.

03 Where is the tool magazine on the MCP-12060?

On the column. AWEA says the tool magazine is attached to the column, which eliminates the need to move the X-axis for tool changes. With 12,000 mm (472.4 in) of X travel and a rapid rate of 10 m/min (394 ipm), a magazine fixed at one end of the bed would add a long trip to every change.

04 What are the tool size limits?

Maximum tool length is 400 mm (15.7 in) and maximum tool weight is 20 kg (44 lb). Maximum diameter is Ø125 mm (Ø4.9 in), rising to Ø200 mm (Ø7.9 in) when the adjacent pockets are left empty. The spindle taper is BBT50.

05 What are the next sizes up and down?

The MCP-10060 has 10,000 mm (393.7 in) of X travel and a 10,000 x 4,800 mm (393.7 x 189.0 in) table. The MCP-14060 has 14,000 mm (551.2 in) and a 14,000 x 4,800 mm (551.2 x 189.0 in) table. Y, Z, spindle and magazine are the same on all three.
