Overview

The AXA VPC 2800 U is named after its table: an NC rotary table with a ø 2,800 mm (110.2 in) clamping surface that carries 15,000 kg (33,069 lb). Around it AXA builds a gantry machining centre with 3,900 mm of X, 2,940 mm of Y and 1,100 mm of Z, and a 1-axis tilting head for 5-sides and 5-axes machining of large cubic workpieces.

AXA positions the machine between its two gantry families. In its own description, it unites the advantages of the compact VPC range with the working area proportions of the PFZ/UPFZ portal machines. The construction differs from the smaller VPC models in one important way: here a portal support on columns travels in X, with a real gantry drive, individual guideways and a direct measuring system for both portal columns. Linear axes use ball screws or rack and pinion drives.

The head swivels around the Y-axis and is listed as fully interpolating, with a hydraulic clamping system for heavy-duty machining. AXA's page gives the tilting range as 0° to -90°. The rotary table is integrated in the machine bed, clamps hydraulically and withstands a tangential moment of 40,000 Nm and a tilting moment of 90,000 Nm.

The standard spindle, drive no. 140, is rated differently from AXA's other drives: 200 Nm and 63 kW at 100% DC, that is in continuous duty. Drive no. 173 with 445 Nm and 70 kW at 40% DC is the option. X can be extended to 5,000 mm and Z to 1,300 mm.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How large and heavy can a workpiece on the VPC 2800 U be?

The rotary table has a ø 2,800 mm clamping surface and a maximum transport weight of 15,000 kg. Travels are 3,900 mm in X (5,000 mm optional), 2,940 mm in Y and 1,100 mm in Z (1,300 mm optional). The minimum distance from table to spindle nose is 90 mm vertical and 180 mm horizontal.

02 Is the VPC 2800 U a 5-axis machine?

Yes. It combines a 1-axis tilting spindle swivelling around the Y-axis (B-axis), which the data sheet lists as fully interpolating, with a continuously turning NC rotary table around the Z-axis. AXA describes it for 5-sides and 5-axes machining of large cubic workpieces.

03 What spindle drives are offered?

Drive no. 140 is standard: 6,000 rpm, optionally up to 9,000 rpm, with 200 Nm and 63 kW at 100% DC. Drive no. 173 is the optional feature: 6,000 rpm, optionally up to 7,500 rpm, with 445 Nm and 70 kW at 40% DC. The taper is SK 50, with BT 50 or HSK A100 optional.

04 How accurate is the rotary table?

The accuracy of the measuring system is ± 2.5 arcsec as standard and 1 arcsec as an optional feature. Linear positioning accuracy is ± 0.015 mm per 1,000 mm with the vertical spindle, optionally ± 0.008 mm, and repeating accuracy is ± 0.01 mm, optionally ± 0.006 mm.
