Price estimate
We do not have a price for the AXA UPFZ 40 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The AXA UPFZ 40 is a large gantry machining centre with a 2-axis tilting head, built for 5-side machining of large cubic workpieces. The head turns 360° in its B-axis and 180° in its A-axis, so the SK 40 spindle can point down, sideways in any direction, or diagonally. The part stays where it was clamped.
As with AXA's other large gantries, the size is chosen from ranges: 3,000 mm to 10,000 mm in X, 1,500 mm to 4,000 mm in Y and 800 mm to 1,500 mm in Z. Y goes a full metre wider than on the three-axis PFZ 40, which stops at 3,000 mm. There is a reason. When the head lies horizontal it takes up travel, and AXA's table states the loss: 2 x 410 mm in X and 2 x 410 mm in Y. A part that must be machined on opposite sides therefore needs a machine that much larger than the part.
Head indexing is 2.5° as standard. Steps of 1° or 0.001° are optional features, and AXA's page speaks of stepless positioning, so the indexing grade should be fixed in the quotation.
Drive no. 110 is standard with 143 Nm and 30 kW at 40% DC, and no. 113 with 255 Nm is the strongest option. Rapids are 15/15/10 m/min, optionally 20/20/15 m/min. AXA highlights the walk-in work area for set-up, and the stationary tool changer starts at 22 pockets.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 2-axis tilting head with 180° in the A-axis and 360° in the B-axis for 5-side machining
- Y travel range up to 4,000 mm, with X up to 10,000 mm
- Walk-in work area for set-up and equipping, according to AXA
- Head indexing can be refined from 2.5° to 1° or 0.001° as options
- Table rated at 1,500 kg/m² with 22 mm T-slots
Limitations
- With the spindle horizontal, travel is reduced by 2 x 410 mm in both X and Y
- Standard head indexing is 2.5°
- SK 40 drives end at 255 Nm; heavier cutting calls for the UPFZ 50
- Rapids of 15/15/10 m/min and positioning accuracy of ± 0.02 mm per 1,000 mm as standard

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The data sheet lists a swivelling range of 180° for the A-axis and 360° for the B-axis. Indexing is 2.5° as standard, with 1° and 0.001° as optional features. AXA says the UPFZ machines large workpieces all the way round: horizontally, vertically and even diagonally.
02
It is the travel lost when the head is horizontal. AXA lists 2 x 410 mm for the X-traverse range and 2 x 410 mm for the Y-traverse range, which reads as 410 mm at each end of the axis. The usable travel for side machining is shorter than the nominal travel by that amount.
03
X from 3,000 mm to 10,000 mm, Y from 1,500 mm to 4,000 mm and Z from 800 mm to 1,500 mm. The table is 1,500 mm to 3,000 mm wide and about as long as the X travel. The minimum distance from table to spindle nose is 230 mm, horizontal and vertical.
04
The UPFZ 50 has an SK 50 spindle with a 540 Nm standard drive, a 12,000 N feed force and, according to AXA, a portal in inclined bed version for more stability. The UPFZ 40 has SK 40 with 143 Nm and 9,000 N. Travel ranges and head angles are the same.
