Price estimate: uncertain

We have no price for the Hartford HSA-420EA that we can cite and no estimate we can stand behind, so this page shows no number rather than a guess. A quote from Hartford or an authorised dealer is the reliable figure.

What moves the final price

  • Spindle, control and probing options
  • Tool changer capacity and tooling package
  • Automation — pallet changers, bar feeders, robot cells

Overview

Four metres long and 1,800 mm wide: the Hartford HSA-420EA is the slimmest of the four-metre five-face HSA machines. X travel is 4,000 mm (157.5 in), Y travel 2,000 mm (78.7 in), and the 4,000 x 1,800 mm (157.5 x 70.9 in) table carries 12,000 kg (26,455 lb) on fifteen T-slots.

It shares its cross section with the HSA-220EA and HSA-320EA, which have the same Y travel and table width on shorter beds. What grows with length is the rating: 8,000 kg (17,637 lb) on the HSA-220EA, 10,000 kg (22,046 lb) on the HSA-320EA, 12,000 kg here.

A four-metre machine sits exactly on the boundary of Hartford's statement about X-axis ballscrew support, which is standard on models above 5 meters and optional below 4 meters. Neither half of that sentence covers this size, so settle it in the quotation. The purpose of the support is to stop a long screw sagging under its own weight.

The spindle is #50 with a 6,000 rpm gear head, an 8,000 rpm option and a 10,000 rpm hybrid alternative. Z travel is 1,000 mm or, optionally, 1,200 mm. Side faces are machined with automatic angular heads taken from a switching head compartment.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 4,000 mm (157.5 in) of X travel in the narrowest four-metre frame of the line
  • 12,000 kg (26,455 lb) table load on a 4,000 x 1,800 mm table
  • Automatic universal angular head and switching head compartment for five-face work
  • Self-made spindle with deflection within 5 μm, per Hartford

Limitations

  • Only 2,000 mm (78.7 in) of Y travel
  • Hartford's ballscrew support statement does not say which way four-metre models go
  • The table is 1,800 mm wide; the HSA-423EA offers 2,200 mm at the same 12,000 kg rating
06

Best For

Long beams, slideways and bed castings up to four metres End-face and side-face machining of slim weldments Parts up to 12,000 kg (26,455 lb) that do not need a wide table

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What size parts fit the HSA-420EA?

The table is 4,000 x 1,800 mm (157.5 x 70.9 in) and rated for 12,000 kg (26,455 lb). Travel is 4,000 mm in X, 2,000 mm (78.7 in) in Y and 1,000 mm in Z, with 1,200 mm of Z as an option.

02 Is the X-axis ballscrew supported on the HSA-420EA?

Hartford's wording is that X axis ballscrew support is standard for models above 5 meters and optional below 4 meters. A machine of exactly four metres falls between the two, so the answer has to come from Hartford for the specific order.

03 How does the HSA-420EA compare with the HSA-423EA?

The HSA-423EA is wider: a 4,000 x 2,200 mm (157.5 x 86.6 in) table and 2,300 mm (90.6 in) of Y travel. Both are rated at 12,000 kg and both have 4,000 mm of X.

04 What spindle does the HSA-420EA use?

A #50 taper spindle that Hartford makes itself, stated to run with deflection within 5 μm. The gear head is 6,000 rpm with 8,000 rpm optional, and a 10,000 rpm hybrid spindle is also in the table. Power is 18.5 / 22 kW, optionally 30 / 35 kW.
