Overview

The Ibarmia ZLS5 is the large construction size of the Z series with the tilting ZS head. It lists 84 kW (112.6 hp) and 12,000 rpm on SK-50, BT-50, HSK A-100 or CAPTO 8 tool holders. Ibarmia's phrase for its size steps is "larger columns for even more powerful spindles", and this model is where that leads.

Height is the practical gain. Z is 1,100 mm (43.3 in) as listed, with 1,300 mm (51.2 in) as an option, where the medium ZMS5 offers 800 or 900 mm (31.5 or 35.4 in). That difference is used up quickly once a rotary table, a fixture and a tall part are stacked under a head that also has to swing to horizontal. Y comes in three lengths: 800, 1,000 or 1,100 mm (31.5, 39.4 or 43.3 in). X is up to 12,000 mm (472.4 in).

Power and speed arrive together here. The ZMS5 pairs its SK-50 class spindle with 8,000 rpm, so a shop has to decide between tool size and speed; the ZLS5 lists 12,000 rpm with the same holders. Roughing with large cutters and finishing with smaller ones can then stay on one machine and one set-up. No torque figure is printed, so ask for the curve.

As a Z Multiprocess, the ZLS5 turns as well. The series lists built-in rotary tables from ø800 mm to ø1200 mm, loads up to 6000 kg and table speeds up to 800 rpm. Treat those as the limits of the range and confirm the load and speed for the table diameter in your quotation. Grinding cycles are listed too, with surface quality down to 0.8 μm depending on the process.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 84 kW (112.6 hp) and 12,000 rpm with SK-50, BT-50, HSK A-100 or CAPTO 8 holders: power and speed on the same spindle
  • Z of 1,100 mm (43.3 in), or 1,300 mm (51.2 in) as an option, for tall parts and stacked fixtures
  • Three Y travels to choose from: 800, 1,000 or 1,100 mm (31.5, 39.4 or 43.3 in)
  • ZS head tilts +/- 120º on the B axis with a torque motor
  • Z Multiprocess version adds turning, grinding cycles and gear cutting functions

Limitations

  • The 1,300 mm (51.2 in) Z is an option, not the listed standard
  • No SK-40 class holder is offered on this size; that interface is on the ZMS4
  • Spindle torque, table load and magazine capacity are not printed on the product page
  • Y tops out at 1,100 mm (43.3 in) even on the large column, so wide parts still have to fit a narrow cross travel
06

Best For

Tall workpieces and fixtures that need 1,100 mm (43.3 in) of Z or more Roughing and finishing in one set-up with SK-50 class tools at up to 12,000 rpm Long structural parts up to 12,000 mm (472.4 in) of X travel Turned and milled parts on built-in rotary tables (Z Multiprocess)

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What makes the Ibarmia ZLS5 the large size?

The column. Ibarmia sorts the Z series by construction size and fits the larger columns with more powerful spindles. On the ZLS5 that means 84 kW (112.6 hp) at 12,000 rpm, Z of 1,100 mm (43.3 in) with a 1,300 mm (51.2 in) option, and a Y travel available up to 1,100 mm (43.3 in). The ZMS5 is the medium size with the same tool holders.

02 How much Z travel does the ZLS5 have?

1,100 mm (43.3 in) is the listed travel and 1,300 mm (51.2 in) is offered as an option. On a tilting-head machine part of that height goes to the head itself when it swings toward horizontal, and more goes to any rotary table or trunnion under the part, so work out the stack before settling on the standard Z.

03 Which tool holders can the ZLS5 be ordered with?

SK-50, BT-50, HSK A-100 or CAPTO 8. All four are large interfaces for heavy tools. The product page lists them with a spindle of 84 kW (112.6 hp) and 12,000 rpm. It does not say whether every holder is available with every spindle, so confirm the combination you want.

04 Can the ZLS5 grind and cut gears?

The Z Multiprocess version lists both. Grinding cycles cover external cylindrical, internal cylindrical and flat surfaces, with surface quality down to 0.8 μm depending on the process. Gear cutting functions cover spur and helical gears by skiving and hobbing, with gear qualities up to DIN 9 for roughing and DIN 7 for finishing.

05 Does the ZLS5 have a rotary table?

It can. The base structure is a fixed table with a travelling column. Ibarmia offers built-in and bolt-on rotary tables that work on a vertical or horizontal axis, and combining one with the +/- 120º B axis head is what gives simultaneous 5 axis machining. For the Multiprocess version the built-in tables run from ø800 mm to ø1200 mm.
