Hwacheon D3-5AX

The Hwacheon D3-5AX is a five-axis machining center with a Ø800 mm (Ø31.5 in) rotary table and 800 × 650 × 575 mm (31.5 × 25.6 × 22.6 in) of X, Y and Z travel. Its B axis swings from -30° to +110° and C turns a full 360°. What sets it apart in the range is choice: Hwacheon offers four spindles on this frame, 12,000, 14,000, 20,000 and 24,000 rpm, and the rest of the specification follows from which one is ordered.

The 12K, 20K and 24K spindles all carry a 37 / 18.5 kW (49.6 / 24.8 hp) rating. The 14K is listed at 37 / 22 kW (49.6 / 29.5 hp), so its second figure is the highest of the four, which makes it the one to pick for steel and heavier stock removal. All four run on Ø70 mm (Ø2.8 in) bearings with jacket cooling from an oil cooler, but the 12K is grease-lubricated and the other three use oil-jet lubrication. The 12K, 14K and 20K take BBT-40 tooling, with CAT-40, HSK-A63 or SK-40 as options. The 24K comes with HSK-A63, so a shop running BBT-40 holders elsewhere would need a second set of holders for it.

The Ø800 mm table is rated for 600 kgf (1,323 lb) and has five 18 mm T-slots at 80 mm pitch. The smaller D2-5AX has a Ø600 mm (23.6 in) table rated 500 kgf (1,102 lb), so the D3 buys more diameter rather than much more load. Spindle nose to table runs from 215 to 790 mm (8.5 to 31.1 in), which leaves room for a tall fixture on the rotary axes. Linear rapids are 30 m/min (1,181 ipm) on all three axes, and B and C index at 25 rpm.

The magazine holds 30 tools as standard, with 40 or 60 as options, and selects tools by memory random. A tool may be Ø80 mm (Ø3.1 in) with the adjacent pockets full or Ø130 mm (Ø5.1 in) with them empty, up to 300 mm (11.8 in) long and 8 kgf (18 lb). The control is a Fanuc 0i-MF Plus, with a Fanuc 31i-B5 Plus as an option. Plan for 70 kVA of supply, a 528.5 L coolant tank and a machine of 15,580 kgf (34,348 lb) on a 4,602 x 4,022 mm (181.2 x 158.3 in) footprint, 3,613 mm (142.2 in) high.
