Price estimate
We do not have a price for the SHW PowerPortal 4000 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The SHW PowerPortal 4000 is a portal milling machine: the milling head works from above over a table that carries the part in its assembly position. SHW offers it in a grid of sizes. X travel runs from 4,000 to 7,000 mm (157.5 to 275.6 in), Y from 3,100 to 4,600 mm (122.0 to 181.1 in), and Z is 1,600 mm (63.0 in) on every size.
Table sizes follow the same logic. Widths are 2,000 | 2,500 mm (78.7 | 98.4 in) and lengths 4,000 | 5,000 | 6,000 | 7,000 mm (157.5 | 196.9 | 236.2 | 275.6 in), with loading of up to 25,000 kg (55,115 lb). SHW's remark about machining in the assembly position follows from this layout. A heavy part lies flat, the way it will later be installed, and the head reaches the top and the sides.
Three milling heads are listed, and the choice sets the character of the machine. The universal milling heads are rated 50/75 kW (67.1/100.6 hp) with up to 8,000 rpm; the orthogonal one swivels ± 90° on A and ± 180° on C, the diagonal one ± 180° on both axes. The fork milling head is listed with 56/70 kW (75.1/93.9 hp), up to 18,000 rpm and stepless axes of ±105° and ± 200°. Stepless axes are what simultaneous contouring needs, so free-form surfaces are the fork head's job.
Axis dynamics are high for the size: 0-32,000 mm/min (0-1,260 ipm) in X and 0-40,000 mm/min (0-1,575 ipm) in Y and Z, with acceleration up to 3.5 m/s² on X and Z and up to 4.0 m/s² on Y. The tool changer has 48 to 120 places. Controls are Siemens or Heidenhain, and SHW lists a dynamic package, an accuracy package and a chip management package as options.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Table loading of up to 25,000 kg (55,115 lb)
- Y and Z axes at 0-40,000 mm/min (0-1,575 ipm), with acceleration up to 4.0 m/s² on Y
- Fork milling head with up to 18,000 rpm and stepless A and C axes
- Tool changer with 48 to 120 places
- X travel selectable from 4,000 to 7,000 mm (157.5 to 275.6 in)
Limitations
- Z travel is 1,600 mm (63.0 in) whatever the X and Y size
- The universal milling heads stop at up to 8,000 rpm; higher speed needs the fork milling head
- X travel ends at 7,000 mm; SHW's travelling column machines go much further, the PowerSpeed 4000 being listed with a maximum of 40,000 mm (1,574.8 in)
- No torque figures are published for any of the heads

Three. A universal milling head (orthogonal) with A-axis ± 90° and C-axis ± 180°, a universal milling head (diagonal /45°) with ± 180° on both axes, and a fork milling head with A-axis ±105° and C-axis ± 200°, both stepless. SHW's flyer gives a loading of up to 25,000 kg (55,115 lb). It does not break the figure down by table size, so check the rating for the width and length you choose, and for any rotary table or turntable attachment placed on top.
04
Feeds and rapid traverse are 0-32,000 mm/min (0-1,260 ipm) on the X axis and 0-40,000 mm/min (0-1,575 ipm) on Y and Z. Acceleration is up to 3.5 m/s² on X and Z and up to 4.0 m/s² on Y. SHW also lists a dynamic package among the options.
