Overview
The DMG Mori NMV 5000 DCG is the larger platform in the NMV vertical 5-axis lineup, stepping up to 730 x 510 x 510 mm (28.7 x 20.1 x 20.1 in) of travel while retaining the DCG (Driven at the Center of Gravity) technology that defines this series. Where the NMV 3000 is a small-parts specialist, the 5000 opens the door to mid-size aerospace components, larger mold work, and automotive production parts.
The DCG drive system positions the ball screw at the center of gravity of each moving axis component. This eliminates the pitching moment that causes vibration in conventional designs, translating to better surface finish at aggressive feed rates and longer tool life. Combined with ORC (Octagonal Ram Construction) on the Z-axis column, the machine delivers stiffness-to-weight ratios that let you push parameters harder than the footprint suggests.
The trunnion table handles workpieces up to 500 mm (19.7 in) in diameter and 450 mm (17.7 in) tall, with a 300 kg (661 lb) table load capacity. The A-axis tilts ±120 degrees and the C-axis rotates 360 degrees continuous, both driven by direct drive motors for backlash-free positioning. That table load is generous for a vertical 5-axis and accommodates heavier aerospace billets and steel mold blocks.
The standard spindle runs 12,000 RPM with 22 kW (30 hp) and 119 Nm of torque through a BIG-PLUS BT40 taper. High-speed options push to 20,000 RPM. The MAPPS Fanuc control with 24-inch ERGOline X touchscreen handles programming and operation, with CELOS X platform compatibility for shop-floor connectivity.
Rapid traverse rates reach 36 m/min on all linear axes. The tool magazine starts at 30 positions and expands to 60 or 120. Machine weight comes in around 9,500 kg (20,940 lb), providing a mass foundation that absorbs vibration during heavy cuts. DMG Mori also offers the NMV 5000 DCG in a Gear Production+ variant specifically configured for 5-axis gear cutting, targeting shops that need to machine gears without dedicated hobbing equipment. The standard machine competes with the Okuma MU-5000V, Mazak VARIAXIS i-500, and Makino D500. Specs sourced from DMG Mori published data.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- DCG drive technology eliminates pitching vibration for superior surface finish at aggressive feed rates
- 730 mm X-axis travel and 300 kg table load handle mid-size aerospace and mold components
- ±120° A-axis tilt with direct drive motors provides backlash-free positioning and full access to undercuts
- 9,500 kg machine weight from rigid one-piece casting absorbs vibration during heavy roughing
- Gear Production+ variant available for 5-axis gear cutting without dedicated hobbing equipment
- ORC (Octagonal Ram Construction) Z-axis column adds cross-sectional stiffness
- MAPPS Fanuc control integrates well in Fanuc-standardized shops with large operator talent pool
Limitations
- BT40 taper limits tool rigidity for the heaviest cuts; shops doing aggressive titanium roughing may prefer HSK-A63 or CAT50
- MAPPS Fanuc control lacks some advanced 5-axis cycle capabilities found on Siemens and Heidenhain platforms
- Starting at $350K and commonly $450K+ configured, significant investment for low-volume shops
- DMG Mori service and parts costs run higher than most competitors

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New NMV 5000 DCG machines run $350,000 to $520,000 depending on configuration. The Gear Production+ variant and expanded tool magazine push toward the top. Used units from 2014-2018 sell in the $180,000-$280,000 range.
02
The NMV 5000 DCG Gear Production+ is factory-configured for 5-axis gear cutting using simultaneous 5-axis interpolation to cut gear teeth without dedicated hobbing or shaping equipment.
03
Both are vertical 5-axis machines targeting similar part sizes. The Okuma offers OSP control with Thermo-Friendly Concept for thermal stability. The NMV 5000 DCG brings DCG drive technology for vibration reduction. The Okuma typically prices slightly lower with a strong reliability reputation.
04
Yes. DMG Mori offers pallet pool integration, robotic loading via WH Cell systems, and the PH Cell pallet handling system. Many production installations run the NMV 5000 DCG in multi-machine cells.
05
For the part sizes and materials this machine targets, BT40 is adequate for most applications. The BIG-PLUS dual-contact taper improves rigidity over standard BT40. However, shops doing heavy titanium roughing may prefer HSK-A63 or CAT50 platforms.
