DMG Mori NMV 5000 DCG

Gear work is where the DMG MORI NMV 5000 DCG departs from an ordinary 5-axis machining center. Its travels are 730 mm (28.7 in) in X and 510 mm (20.1 in) in both Y and Z, it takes workpieces up to 700 mm (27.6 in) in diameter, 450 mm (17.7 in) high and 300 kg (661.4 lb), and DMG MORI's Highlights list a package called Gear Production+ for it.

Gear Production+ is described as an integrated solution for gear machining functions that combines turning, milling, gear roughing and grinding in one machine, equipped with a gear grinding unit with automatic gear alignment. The practical gain is in setups. A gear that is turned, roughed and ground without leaving the table does not have to be re-aligned on a second machine, and the automatic alignment takes over the step of finding the teeth before grinding. The Highlights do not say whether the package is standard or an extra, so settle that before comparing quotations.

The envelope suits disc-shaped parts. A 700 mm diameter is larger than the 510 mm of Y travel and close to the 730 mm of X, which works because the rotary table brings each side of the part to the spindle. Height is the tighter limit at 450 mm, and the 300 kg ceiling has to be weighed against the blank together with its fixture. A steel disc near the full diameter gets heavy quickly, so check weight before diameter.

The rotary axes use direct drive motors, which DMG MORI describes as a drive system with zero backlash, high-speed rotation and high-precision indexing. That is relevant to gears in particular, where tooth spacing depends on how accurately the table indexes. The smaller NMV 3000 DCG has 500 mm (19.7 in) of X and 350 mm (13.8 in) of Y on the same 510 mm (20.1 in) Z. Spindle and magazine figures are absent from the Highlights and have to come from the quotation.
