Overview

The DN Solutions DCM 2740 U is a heavy-duty double-column machining center with movable crossrail (W-axis) and universal head for full 5-axis capability. With 4,250 x 3,200 x 1,000 mm of X/Y/Z travel plus 1,100 mm of W-axis travel, this machine offers significantly more vertical reach than the fixed-crossrail DBM models, making it the go-to platform for deep cavity dies and tall workpieces.

The W-axis is the defining feature of the DCM series. It provides 1,100 mm of crossrail elevation change, effectively giving you over 2,000 mm of total vertical reach when combined with the Z-axis. This means you can machine the top of a tall workpiece and then lower the crossrail to reach deep features without running out of Z-travel. Rapid traverse on W runs at 3 m/min — slow but adequate since crossrail repositioning is an infrequent operation within most cycles.

The spindle delivers 15,000 RPM, 46 kW (61.7 hp), and 146 Nm through an HSK-A100 taper. The universal head provides full 5-axis positioning for complex contours and undercuts. DN Solutions includes DSQ I/II/III functions — their proprietary machining quality optimization system that improves surface finish on die/mold contours through feed rate smoothing and path optimization.

The 4,100 x 2,200 mm table supports up to 20,000 kg (44,092 lb), so heavy die blocks and large castings aren't a concern. Rapid traverse on the linear axes runs 16/20/15 m/min on X/Y/Z respectively — notably faster Y-axis rapids than the BM and DBM models.

High-precision and high-speed head attachments are available with auto-change capability. The U-head cooling system maintains thermal stability during extended cutting cycles. At 70,000 kg (154,324 lb) with a footprint of 11,200 x 7,730 x 7,700 mm, the DCM 2740 U is a substantial machine that requires dedicated floor space and foundation engineering. Rear and semi covers are standard for chip containment.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • W-axis provides 1,100 mm of crossrail travel for over 2,000 mm of total vertical reach
  • 20,000 kg table capacity handles the heaviest die blocks and castings without concern
  • DSQ I/II/III functions optimize surface finish quality on complex die/mold contours
  • 20 m/min Y-axis rapids are faster than the fixed-crossrail BM and DBM series
  • Auto-change head attachments with high-precision and high-speed options
  • U-head cooling system maintains thermal stability during long cutting cycles
  • 70,000 kg machine mass provides exceptional vibration damping during heavy cuts

Limitations

  • 70,000 kg weight is a serious installation challenge requiring extensive foundation engineering
  • 40-tool magazine is smaller than the 60-tool standard on DBM models — may need frequent tool changes
  • 3 m/min W-axis rapid is slow — crossrail repositioning adds cycle time on tall parts
  • 7,700 mm machine height may require facility modifications for overhead clearance
  • Price starting at $1.5M targets only the largest die/mold operations

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What's the advantage of the W-axis on the DCM vs the DBM?

The W-axis moves the entire crossrail up and down, giving you an additional 1,100 mm of vertical positioning beyond the 1,000 mm Z-axis stroke. This means you can machine features at the top of a tall workpiece, then lower the crossrail to reach deep cavities at the bottom — all without re-fixturing. The DBM models have a fixed crossrail, limiting your total vertical reach to the Z-axis stroke alone. If your parts have features spread across more than 1,000 mm of height, the DCM's W-axis is the right solution.

02 How does the DCM 2740 U compare to the DCM 2740 F II?

The 'U' suffix indicates a universal head for 5-axis machining, while the 'F II' is a 3-axis variant with W-axis crossrail but without the universal head. The U model costs more but gives you full 5-axis positioning capability. If you only need 3-axis machining with the vertical flexibility of the W-axis, the F II saves money.

03 What are the DSQ functions?

DSQ (Die Machining Quality) is DN Solutions' proprietary technology for die/mold machining optimization. It includes three levels: DSQ I optimizes feed rates for smooth surface finish, DSQ II adds path smoothing for complex contours, and DSQ III provides advanced corner deceleration control. These functions help achieve better surface quality without sacrificing cycle time on complex 3D surfaces.

04 Why is the tool magazine smaller (40 tools) than the DBM series (60 tools)?

The DCM series uses a different tool magazine configuration due to the movable crossrail architecture. The 40-tool standard magazine covers most operations, but it can feel tight on complex jobs requiring many different tools. Check with your distributor about expanded magazine options if your typical tool library exceeds 40 positions.
