Overview

Four metres of X travel and a fork head: the Hartford 5BC-429 is a 5-axis double-column machining center for long parts. X is 4,000 mm (157.5 in), Y is 2,900 mm (114.2 in), and the table measures 4,000 x 2,200 mm (157.5 x 86.6 in) with a 12,000 kg (26,455 lb) load.

Hartford labels the 5BC line as solutions for aerospace components, and the 5BC-429 has the proportions of that work: spars, ribs, frames and skin panels are long and comparatively narrow. They are cut from aluminium plate at high spindle speed, which is what the HSK-A63 spindle at 15,000 / 24,000 rpm is for. Titanium and steel fittings call for the HSK-A100 spindle at 12,000 rpm and its 34 /43 kW motor.

Long travels raise the question of ballscrew sag. Hartford supports the X and Y ballscrews along their length to counter it. The Z ram runs on four linear guideways, with 1,000 mm of stroke or 1,200 mm as the option.

Tool storage is 32 or 40 tools, or 60 with the A-type magazine. Maximum tool weight is 7 kg for HSK-A63 and 20 kg for HSK-A100. The B and C axes of the head each deliver up to 1,000 NM.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How long a part can the Hartford 5BC-429 machine?

X travel is 4,000 mm (157.5 in) and the table is 4,000 x 2,200 mm (157.5 x 86.6 in). Y travel is 2,900 mm (114.2 in) and Z travel 1,000 mm, or 1,200 mm as an option.

02 What is the table load of the 5BC-429?

12,000 kg (26,455 lb) as an average load. The table is fixed between the columns, so the load does not move during cutting; the crossbeam and head carry out all axis motion above it.

03 How do the two spindle versions of the 5BC-429 differ?

The HSK-A63 version runs 15,000 / 24,000 rpm with a 29.5 / 37 kW motor (30 / 37 kW optional) and a 7 kg tool weight limit. The HSK-A100 version runs 12,000 rpm with 34 /43 kW and a 20 kg limit.

04 How does Hartford keep long axes accurate on the 5BC-429?

The X and Y ballscrews are supported to counter sag, the Z axis runs on four linear guideways, and the one-piece columns meet the base over a contact area of 1250 mm. The crossbeam is a slant beam design with a 45 ° force flow.
