Overview

The Starrag Droop+Rein FOGS Series is a family of overhead gantry-type 5-axis machining centers for high-speed and heavy-duty machining of large aerospace structures, molds and dies, landing gear components, and titanium airframe parts.

Available in two variants: FOGS NEO with roller-guided axes for high-speed aluminum/composite machining, and FOGS HD with hydrostatic guideways for heavy-duty titanium/steel roughing. The FOGS HD delivers up to 100 kW with 7,500 Nm torque.

Both variants feature continuous 5-axis with fork-type heads, X-axis configurable from 3,000 to 20,000+ mm. Overhead gantry enables dual work zone configurations. Optional rotary table for mill-turn.

Siemens SINUMERIK 840D sl or SINUMERIK ONE control. Starrag IPS / Industry 4.0 platform. New machines: $3,000,000 to $10,000,000+.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Two variants cover high-speed aluminum (NEO) to heavy-duty titanium (HD)
  • 100 kW / 7,500 Nm on FOGS HD for aggressive titanium removal
  • Overhead gantry with dual work zone configurations
  • Hydrostatic guideways on HD eliminate stick-slip
  • X-axis configurable to 20,000+ mm for largest panels
  • Starrag IPS / Industry 4.0 monitoring

Limitations

  • One of the most expensive machine tool investments
  • Massive footprint requires specialized foundations
  • Lead times of 12-24 months
  • NEO and HD variants not interchangeable
