Overview
The Mazak VARIAXIS i-800T is the heavy-duty flagship of Mazak's VARIAXIS i-Series, combining CAT No.50 spindle authority with full simultaneous 5-axis capability on a rigid trunnion platform. Where the smaller i-500 and i-700T run No.40 tapers suited for aluminum and general work, the i-800T steps up to the torque and rigidity required for aggressive roughing in titanium, Inconel, and hardened steel.
Axis travels match the i-700T at 630 x 1,100 x 600 mm (24.8 x 43.3 x 23.6 in), preserving the signature 1,100 mm Y-axis stroke that accommodates elongated aerospace structural parts. The trunnion table measures 800 mm (31.5 in) diameter and supports workpieces up to 1,000 mm (39.37 in) diameter and 375 mm (14.76 in) height, with a 1,000 kg (2,205 lb) load capacity. Mazak also lists an alternative workpiece envelope of 800 mm (31.5 in) diameter by 500 mm (19.69 in) height for parts that fit within the pallet boundary.
The standard spindle runs at 10,000 RPM with 37 kW (50 hp) and 350 Nm (258 ft-lb) of torque through the CAT No.50 taper, as confirmed by Mazak's published product data. That torque rating puts the i-800T firmly in heavy-cutting territory for titanium structural parts, landing gear components, and steel mold work. Roller gear cam drives on both the A-axis (-130 to +30 degrees) and C-axis (360-degree continuous) provide backlash-free positioning.
The MAZATROL SmoothAi control includes AI-based spindle vibration detection that automatically adjusts feeds to suppress chatter. Rapid traverse hits 42 m/min (1,654 ipm). At 20,000 kg (44,092 lb), the machine absorbs vibration during heavy cuts without requiring an oversized foundation. Automation options include a two-pallet changer and PALLETECH integration.
The i-800T competes with the Okuma MU-6300V, DMG Mori DMU 80 P, and Makino D500. Pricing runs $450,000 to $650,000 depending on spindle, ATC, and automation configuration.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- CAT No.50 taper with 350 Nm of torque enables aggressive roughing in titanium, steel, and superalloys that No.40 machines cannot match
- 1,100 mm Y-axis stroke accommodates elongated aerospace structural parts, brackets, and manifolds that would require a larger machine class on competitors
- 1,000 kg table load capacity handles heavy steel and titanium fixtures without deflection during heavy roughing passes
- Roller gear cam drives on both rotary axes eliminate backlash for consistent accuracy during simultaneous 5-axis contouring
- SmoothAi CNC with AI spindle vibration detection automatically suppresses chatter for better surface finish and tool life
- 20,000 kg machine weight provides excellent vibration absorption during aggressive cutting operations
Limitations
- 10,000 RPM maximum spindle speed limits high-speed aluminum machining; shops running predominantly non-ferrous should consider the i-700T with 18K RPM
- 42 m/min rapid traverse is noticeably slower than the 60 m/min on the i-700T, adding non-cutting time on positioning moves
- CAT 50 tooling costs more per holder than CAT 40, increasing total tooling investment for shops building up their library
- 375 mm maximum workpiece height limits tall-part applications compared to the i-700T at 500 mm height capacity

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New i-800T machines price between $450,000 and $650,000 depending on spindle configuration, tool magazine size, and automation options. Adding a two-pallet changer or PALLETECH integration pushes pricing higher. Used i-800T machines from 2016-2021 appear on the secondary market at $200,000-$350,000.
02
The i-800T steps up to CAT No.50 taper with 350 Nm of torque (vs CAT 40 on the i-700T). It has a larger 800 mm table, higher 1,000 kg load capacity, and heavier 20,000 kg machine weight. The tradeoff is lower spindle speed (10K vs 18K RPM) and slower rapids. Choose the i-800T for heavy steel and titanium; the i-700T for smaller parts and aluminum-heavy work.
03
Excellent. The CAT 50 taper with 350 Nm of torque and the rigid 20,000 kg platform make the i-800T one of the better mid-size 5-axis machines for titanium. The 10K RPM spindle provides appropriate surface speeds for Ti-6Al-4V. For heavy titanium roughing, the i-800T significantly outperforms CAT 40 machines.
04
Yes. The VARIAXIS i-800 NEO upgrades to the SmoothAi CNC with enhanced AI features, improved rotary axis cooling, and a modernized touchscreen interface. The physical platform and work envelope remain the same.
