Overview
The Hermle C 32 U GEN2 is the updated generation of one of Hermle's most popular 5-axis machining centers, with significant upgrades in several key specifications. The GEN2 increases Y-axis travel to 650 mm (from 600 mm) and doubles the table load capacity to 1,000 kg (from 500 kg), while adding the Heidenhain TNC7 or Siemens SINUMERIK ONE control options.
X/Y/Z travels are now 650 x 650 x 500 mm (25.6 x 25.6 x 19.7 in) — a symmetrical work envelope that simplifies programming and fixturing. The swiveling rotary table measures 650 mm (25.6 in) diameter with the collision circle at 840 mm (33.1 in) and vertical clearance of 600/635 mm. The A-axis swivels +/- 115 degrees with 360-degree continuous C-axis rotation.
Spindle options span 15,000 to 42,000 rpm including 16,000, 20,000, and 25,000 rpm variants on HSK-A63 tooling. Rapid traverse is a significant upgrade to 45 m/min (1,772 ipm) standard on X and Y axes with optional 60 m/min, and 40 m/min on Z with optional 60 m/min — substantially faster than the original C 32 U's 35 m/min. This reduces non-cutting time considerably on parts with long traverses.
The mineral-cast base weighs approximately 9,500 kg total with the modified gantry architecture maintaining Hermle's signature dynamic accuracy. The 1,000 kg table capacity opens the C 32 U GEN2 to heavier workpieces and more aggressive fixturing that the original 500 kg limit constrained.
New pricing runs $480,000-$680,000. The C 32 U GEN2 competes with the DMG Mori DMU 65 monoBlock, Makino D500, and Grob G350.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Table load capacity doubled to 1,000 kg — handles heavier workpieces and aggressive fixturing
- 45/60 m/min rapids are significantly faster than the original C 32 U at 35 m/min
- Symmetrical 650 x 650 mm X/Y travel simplifies programming and fixturing
- Choice of Heidenhain TNC7 or Siemens SINUMERIK ONE controls
- Spindle options from 15,000 to 42,000 rpm on HSK-A63 cover every application
- Modified gantry and mineral-cast base maintain Hermle's trademark accuracy
Limitations
- Premium pricing at $480K-$680K exceeds competitors like the DMG Mori DMU 65
- 9,500 kg machine weight requires proper floor load planning
- Hermle North American service network is more limited than Japanese or American brands
- 36-tool standard magazine is lean for complex 5-axis programs — 87-tool upgrade recommended

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Major upgrades include: Y-travel increased to 650 mm (from 600 mm), table load doubled to 1,000 kg (from 500 kg), rapids increased to 45/60 m/min (from 35 m/min), TNC7 and SINUMERIK ONE controls, and new 16K/25K spindle options.
02
New machines run $480,000-$680,000 depending on control choice, spindle, tool magazine, and options.
03
The C 32 U GEN2 now matches or exceeds the DMU 65 on rapid traverse while maintaining Hermle's mineral-cast vibration damping advantage. Both offer Heidenhain and Siemens controls. The Hermle commands a premium but delivers better surface finish.
04
Yes. Doubling from 500 to 1,000 kg allows heavier steel workpieces, tombstone-style fixturing, and more aggressive setups that the original 500 kg limit prevented. This makes the C 32 U GEN2 viable for a much wider range of applications.
