Overview

The Campro NU 400C is the largest of the three C-suffix trunnion machines in the NU series, a 5-axis machining center built around a Ø400 mm (Ø15.7 in) table. Travels are 550 mm (21.6 in) in X, 600 mm (23.6 in) in Y and 530 mm (20.8 in) in Z, with an A axis range of +30°~-120° and a 360° C axis.

Size is the reason to pick it. Campro states a maximum workpiece of Ø500x 350 mm and the load row reads 200 / 150 kg (440 / 330 lb) (V / H), double the NU 255C on both counts. Spindle nose to table surface runs 40~570 mm (1.5 in ~ 22.4 in). The machine has grown with the envelope: 8,000 kg (17,636 lb), against 5,600 kg (12,345 lb) for the NU 255C.

Nothing changes at the spindle. It is the same BBT-40, 10,000 rpm, 11 / 15 kW (20 HP) unit listed for the NU 255C, so the larger table brings bigger parts but no extra power to cut them. If the work needs more spindle, the NU 550 has 12,000 rpm and 20 / 30 kW (40 HP). Rotary rapids are the slowest of the C models at 11.1 / 16.6 rpm for A / C, while X, Y and Z rapid at 32 m/min.

Where this model is more flexible is tool storage. The standard magazine holds 24 tools and the table lists larger magazines as options (OPT: 30 / 32 / 40). Each tool can weigh 7 kg (15 lb) and measure 250 mm (9.8 in) in length. The floor plan is 3,350 × 2,350 mm (131 in x 92 in), height 3,000 mm (118 in), and power capacity 30 kVA.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Ø400 mm (Ø15.7 in) table carrying 200 / 150 kg (440 / 330 lb) (V / H)
  • Largest travels of the C models: 550 mm (21.6 in) X, 600 mm (23.6 in) Y, 530 mm (20.8 in) Z
  • Standard 24-tool magazine with larger ones optional (OPT: 30 / 32 / 40)
  • 32 m/min rapids on X, Y and Z, on heavy duty roller type linear guideways
  • Same 30 kVA power capacity as the NU 255C despite the larger envelope

Limitations

  • A / C rapid feedrate of 11.1 / 16.6 rpm, half the 22.2 / 33.3 rpm of the NU 255C
  • Spindle is unchanged from the NU 255C at 10,000 rpm and 11 / 15 kW (20 HP)
  • Tool weight is limited to 7 kg (15 lb) even though the table carries far heavier parts
  • At 8,000 kg (17,636 lb) it needs more foundation and rigging than the smaller NU machines

Best For

5-axis parts up to the stated Ø500x 350 mm on a Ø400 mm (Ø15.7 in) table Workpieces and fixtures up to 200 / 150 kg (440 / 330 lb) (V / H) Jobs that need many tools, using the optional magazines of up to 40 tools Five-sided machining where table speed matters less than envelope

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What size of workpiece does the NU 400C take?

Campro states a maximum workpiece of Ø500x 350 mm. The table is Ø400 mm (Ø15.7 in) and the load is 200 / 150 kg (440 / 330 lb), printed as a V / H pair. Travels are 550 mm (21.6 in), 600 mm (23.6 in) and 530 mm (20.8 in) in X, Y and Z.

02 How does the NU 400C compare with the NU 550?

The NU 550 is a different construction, which Campro calls a monoblock column, with a Ø550 mm (21.6 in) table, 940 mm (37 in) of X travel, a 12,000 rpm spindle and 20 / 30 kW (40 HP). The NU 400C has a Ø400 mm (Ø15.7 in) table, 550 mm (21.6 in) of X travel, 10,000 rpm and 11 / 15 kW (20 HP), and weighs 8,000 kg (17,636 lb).

03 What tool changer options are listed for the NU 400C?

The standard number of tools is 24, with 30 / 32 / 40 given as options. Tool limits are Ø80 mm (Ø3.1 in) diameter, Ø150 mm (Ø5.9 in) with adjacent pockets empty, 250 mm (9.8 in) length and 7 kg (15 lb) weight, on a BBT-40 shank.

04 How fast are the axes of the NU 400C?

The linear axes rapid at 32 / 32 / 32 m/min (1,259.8 / 1,259.8 / 1,259.8 in/min) for X / Y / Z. The rotary axes are listed at 11.1 / 16.6 rpm for A / C. That rotary speed is the same as the NU 550 and lower than the smaller C models.
