We do not have a price for the TOS Kuřim FRUF-A 250-500 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The TOS Kuřim FRUF-A 250-500 is a gantry machining centre in which both the gantry and the cross-rail move. The cross-rail travel is the W axis, listed at 2,000/2,500 mm (78.7/98.4 in), and it is the reason to choose a FRUF over the fixed-rail FRUN.
A moving cross-rail solves a specific problem. On a tall fixed-rail gantry, a low part is reached by running the ram far out, where it is least stiff. Lowering the cross-rail brings the headstock down to the work and keeps the ram short. Raise it again and the same machine clears a tall part. On the A size the clearance between table and cross-rail is listed as 2,800/3,550 mm (110.2/139.8 in), with Z travel of 1,500/2,000 mm (59.1/78.7 in) on top of the W stroke.
The A is the fast, lighter FRUF. Spindle speed is 4,000/6,000 rpm and drive power 30/37/45 kW (40/50/60 hp). X and Y feed at 1 - 20,000 mm/min, with 1 - 30,000 mm/min in brackets. W is a positioning axis and much slower, at 1 - 2,000 mm/min with 1 - 4,000 mm/min in brackets.
Y travel is 4,500 - 7,000 mm (177.2 - 275.6 in) and the columns stand 3,500 - 6,000 mm (137.8 - 236.2 in) apart. X travel is 5,000 - 25,000 by 1,000 mm (196.9 - 984.3 by 39.4 in). The workspace is optional, made up of rotary tables and clamping plates.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Movable cross-rail with a W axis of 2,000/2,500 mm (78.7/98.4 in)
- Table-to-cross-rail clearance of 2,800/3,550 mm (110.2/139.8 in)
- 4,000/6,000 rpm spindle options, the fastest in the FRUF table
- X and Y feeds of 1 - 20,000 mm/min, with 1 - 30,000 mm/min in brackets
- Linear roller or hydrostatic guideways and automatic exchange of spindle heads and tools on the feature list
Limitations
- W feed is 1 - 2,000 mm/min (1 - 4,000 mm/min in brackets), so the cross-rail is set, not contoured
- Drive power of 30/37/45 kW (40/50/60 hp) is the lowest in the FRUF table
- Smallest FRUF frame: Y of 4,500 - 7,000 mm against 5,200 - 10,200 mm (204.7 - 401.6 in) on the FRUF-B 300-800

Frequently Asked Questions
01
It is the vertical travel of the cross-rail. The catalogue lists W (movable cross-rail) at 2,000/2,500 mm (78.7/98.4 in), with a feed of 1 - 2,000 mm/min and 1 - 4,000 mm/min in brackets. Z, the ram stroke, is a separate 1,500/2,000 mm (59.1/78.7 in).
02
The cross-rail. The FRUN-A 200-500 has a fixed cross-rail with a clearance of min. 2,450 mm (min. 96.5 in) and Y travel of 3,600 - 6,600 mm (141.7 - 259.8 in). The FRUF version moves its cross-rail and lists the same spindle speeds, drive power and X, Y and Z feeds.
03
Maximum spindle speed is listed as 4,000/6,000 rpm and drive power as 30/37/45 kW (40/50/60 hp). The series features add thermal stabilization of the headstock and exchangeable spindle heads, automatic exchange of heads and tools, and axial tool cooling.
04
Y travel is 4,500 - 7,000 mm (177.2 - 275.6 in) and the clearance between the columns is 3,500 - 6,000 mm (137.8 - 236.2 in), both set at order. The catalogue does not give a usable table width for this series, so take the column clearance as the working limit and ask for the table size.
