Overview
The DMG Mori DMU 40 eVo is a compact, highly capable 5-axis universal machining center designed for precision simultaneous 5-axis milling of complex components in a small footprint. Part of DMG Mori's eVo series, it combines a swiveling rotary table (trunnion configuration) with a high-speed spindle to deliver full 5-axis simultaneous interpolation with exceptional surface quality and geometric accuracy.
The machine's 500 mm diameter swivel rotary table tilts from −5° to +110° and rotates continuously, providing access to five sides of a workpiece without reclamping. This capability is especially valuable in aerospace, medical, and mold-making applications where complex contoured surfaces must be machined with consistent tool engagement angles to achieve tight tolerances and fine finishes.
Powered by a 15,000 rpm motorized spindle with 18.5 kW, the DMU 40 eVo excels in aluminum, titanium, and steel. An optional 20,000 rpm spindle further extends its range into high-speed machining of hardened tool steels and graphite electrode production. The machine's monobloc cast iron construction and short, stiff spindle design contribute to its excellent dynamic rigidity.
With the Siemens SINUMERIK ONE control and DMG Mori CELOS interface, the DMU 40 eVo supports digital twin simulation for offline programming and verification. Its compact footprint makes it a popular choice for shops transitioning from 3-axis to 5-axis machining without requiring a major facility expansion.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Compact footprint makes 5-axis simultaneous machining accessible without large floor space
- Trunnion table configuration provides excellent access to all five sides of a workpiece
- High-speed spindle (up to 20,000 rpm optional) enables fine surface finishes on hardened steel and aluminum
- SINUMERIK ONE digital twin reduces programming risk and shortens first-part prove-out time
- Rigid monobloc construction delivers consistent accuracy across thermal cycling in production environments
Limitations
- Relatively limited travel (500 mm X) restricts workpiece size compared to larger 5-axis platforms
- 300 kg table load capacity may be insufficient for heavy fixture and part combinations
- Premium DMG Mori pricing versus competing Asian-manufactured 5-axis centers of similar size
Best For
Frequently Asked Questions
01
The DMU 60 eVo offers larger X/Y/Z travels (600 x 500 x 500 mm), a larger swivel rotary table (630 mm), and a higher table load capacity (630 kg). The DMU 40 eVo is the more compact option for smaller workpieces and shops with floor space constraints.
02
Yes. The DMU 40 eVo supports both simultaneous 5-axis interpolation and indexed 3+2 positioning, giving programmers the flexibility to choose the most efficient strategy for each feature.
03
The standard spindle uses an HSK-A63 tool interface, which provides excellent rigidity and repeatability for high-speed milling. HSK-A63 is widely supported by tooling manufacturers and is common in European precision machining environments.
04
Yes. DMG Mori offers automation options including a 2-pallet changer and integration with the PH Cell pallet handling system. Robot loading via the optional side door is also feasible for lights-out production of small to medium batch sizes.
05
Yes, the machine's rigid construction and high spindle torque make it capable of machining titanium. For productive titanium work, the standard 15,000 rpm spindle with appropriate tooling and high-pressure coolant is recommended. The optional 20,000 rpm spindle is better suited to aluminum and hardened steel.
