We do not have a price for the Zimmermann FZG that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Zimmermann FZG is a 5-axis portal milling machine with a low rail gantry, a layout in which the portal travels low alongside the work area instead of on top of raised side walls. Zimmermann introduced the series for particularly long workpieces, and the working ranges on its page are 60,000 mm (2,362.2 in) in X, 6,000 mm (236.2 in) in Y and 2,500 mm (98.4 in) in Z.
With the gantry running low, the machine is accessible from the side for loading and unloading, which matters when the part is far longer than it is wide. Zimmermann pairs the layout with a thermo-symmetrical portal and what it calls a modified basic structure for stability and precision in the milling process.
All three linear axes are listed at up to 60 m/min with max. 3 m/s² of acceleration. Six heads are named as suitable, from the VH10, VH20 and VH30 to the VH40, VH60 and M3ABC, so the same structure can be equipped for light composite work or for heavier cutting. Spindle data depends on the head and is not given on the FZG page. Accuracy is stated as in accordance to VDI/DGQ 3441 or ISO 230-2, and the control is a Heidenhain TNC7 or a Siemens SINUMERIK ONE. The page gives no table, load or footprint figures, so those have to come from the project specification.

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Zimmermann describes the FZG as a downward traveling 5-axis portal milling machine with a low rail gantry. The practical effect it names is access: the machine is accessible from the side for loading and unloading, which suits particularly long workpieces.
02
The page lists 60,000 mm (2,362.2 in) in X, 6,000 mm (236.2 in) in Y and 2,500 mm (98.4 in) in Z. Unlike the tables of the other portal machines, these are given as single values rather than ranges.
03
Suitable heads are the VH10, VH20, VH30, VH40, VH60 and M3ABC. The control is selected from Heidenhain TNC7 and Siemens SINUMERIK ONE. Spindle power and speed depend on the head chosen and are not listed on the FZG page.
04
Both have a low-travelling gantry and side access to the work area. The FZG27 is the lighter series: 5,000 – 16,000 mm of X, Y up to 3,500 mm and a Z of 500 or 750 mm, with the S2, C2, C3 and VH10 heads. The FZG is listed with 6,000 mm of Y and 2,500 mm of Z and takes heads up to the VH60 and M3ABC.
